Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone has hit my problem before as it must be relatively common.

The single lever engine control on the Lewmar pedestal of my 312 is creeping back towards idle while underway. Is there some kind of friction adjustment in the control lever mechanism? If there is how do you dismantle the pod to get to it and what do you adjust?

It was driving me mad this last weekend as it was very difficult to get it to stay around a sensible 2000-2800rpm cruising speed.

Thanks for any advice and guidance.
Regards,
Andrew

For anyone else who comes across this problem there are two solutions:

  1. Buy either the 'official' Morse cable brake (a very crude 'c' shaped piece of metal with a bolt that presses against the cable jacket adding some friction) which costs from around £11 upwards depending on where you buy it and should be fitted on the throttle cable as close to the control end as possible. It seems that lots of people fit them closer to the engine where access to the cable is often easier. It is then just a case of adjusting the tightness of the bolt on the cable jacket until the lever stops creeping.
  2. The Lewmar control pod does have adjustable damping (Lewmar have just sent me the installation instructions). If you look at the pod from the side you will see a small white plug just ahead of (towards the bow from) the neutral button at the bottom of the control lever. If you prise it out you get access to the damper screw. Push the lever forward so that it engages gear and then adjust the screw clockwise to get the required level of friction to prevent the lever creeping back up when underway. It is worth noting that the rubber neutral button is superglued on to the mushroom behind it that extends through the centre of the lever bolt to operate the neutral 'lock' that occurs when it is pushed. To dismantle the whole control pod you would need to prise it off which would probably be swiftly followed by a call to Lewmar for a replacement!

If anyone wants the install guide pdf please let me know by pm and I'll send you a copy.

Having invested in option 1 it is obviously to be expected that Lewmar then replied with details of option 2. Aaargh!

I have uploaded the pdf into the Manuals and Drawings section.
