Our spring cleat on a  Hanse 508 barely 2 seasons old opened up. Fortunately we were aboard. My warning: check all your deck cleats/clamps regularly!

Did something break, or come unthreaded?

We have had a few of our cleats come loose - the bolt unwinds out of the top section. I now check the at the beginning on the "mooring season" and half way through. I have started to put Loctite on the threads which helps but I still check.

Do you apply wrench to the threads to turn them or is there flat spots to get a good grip?  Glad to know this.  I had no idea.

Marc,

On our cleats there is a hole through the threaded bolt so you can put a Philips head screw driver (or similar) through it and turn it to tighten it.

Unthreaded and by checking the other cleats a few more were loose! You can't secure it except with a glue (locktite). Fortunately it wasn't bent so I could just thread it in again. Now I'm waiting for a reaction of Hanse. In fact it is a warranty story, they have some homework to do!

Hanse Yachts tells me that they probably forgot to secure the cleats after the montage with strong Locktite. I'm not convinced, especially wether this is gone hold over the years. I think these cleats should have a better protection against unthreading. Apparently I was also not the only one with this issue. Did they also forget to glue them correctly??
But to be fair: We sailed this season more than 2800 miles from Greifswald to Lagos (Portugal) through the North Sea, Brittany and along the Atlanti coast without any other major issues. The yacht was stressed with quite big waves, wind conditions up to 25 kn and was moored more than 70 times safely thanks to the strong bow thruster of Quick. The Jefa autopilot worked for hours without failure.

Same with the SEASMART clamps!! After 2 months they came loose. Same explanation from Hanse “forgot to fix them “
I Used loctite the secure then. Now after 11 years the  very fine tread (aluminum)is complete destroyed and the fixationplate bent and broken. Very nice design for your livingroom not for a 16meter yacht.
