Diesel Tank Overflow

   Hello and a lucky sailseason 2010 to all of you.

I bought a used Hanse 312 last year and have a nasty problem with the fuel tank or its ventilation.
Whenever I refill the fuel tank a good portion of diesel comes out through the ventilation pipe within the last third of the filling. Even the slowest possible filling speed does not help.

Does anyone out there has a good advice how to fix this problem.

	Same problem with a 311 I assume it is fuel getting into the breather when the boat heals It could be that there is a dip in the line allowing some to get trapped which then gets pushed up by the air pressure caused by fuel entering the main fuel line. It only happens to me 50% of the time but when I am least prepared for it I get a crew to stand there & stick 2 fingers over the 2 holes at the first sign of venting fuel I tried tape over the vent whilst filling & it just meant that i could not get any fuel in the tank. I had hoped the air would bypass up the main filler hose If you get an answer let me know. It is embarassing in harbour to keep letting fuel into the water Daydream Believer

	Hi I have a Hanse 312 and have not seen this problem. To find the reason for the problem start with a full tank and try to blow a little air into the breather. If you fell resistance it is below the surface. If not then you have the problem with the dip. This could be solved by changing the piping or blowing air throughthe breather before filling diesel. Hope this is of some help.. Have a good sailing season

	Actually I have just stripped out some of the casing & changed the sail drive. but I cannot see the breather pipe. It has to go under the cockpit floor so I am convinced that there is a dip in the breather which fills when on port tack If I do not go on starboard tack before filling there is a small amount of fuel left in the pipe. The problem is intermitent so this is probably correct. When filling the tank the air generally runs back up the main pipe so there is not enough presure to push the fuel up the breather However, I think the inlet hose projects into the tank a bit thus stopping air going back up as the tank fills. At this point the pressure pushes the bit in the breather out all over the deck even though the breather outlet is higer than the inlet I have found a small funnel which fits over the outlet point on the deck. I am going to put the small end up the dinghy pump & give a few good pumps of air which should clear the bit in the breather. I think that will solve the problem --- but then !!!!- Daydream Believer
