A fully functional option is to spray the mast opening and sail-guides with teflon spray twice a year. With this I am able to hoist the sail ~80% of the way by hand force.Means more money for beersBig%20smile

After having same problem with my mainsail and tried all lubricants there is I got a hint from an other Swedish 370 owner to resaw the travellers and change the whole kit. Sorry not knowing the names in english but a picture says more than words so look into www.cdg.nu/370 and choose FÖRBÄTTRINGAR - STORSEGEL (only in Swedish sorry) . A half day and 150 EUR later I can now hoist the sail with one hand almost to the top.

If I had known this earlier I had saved many hours of bad language.

Gregor,

I have a question regarding the wheel you fixed to the Rutgerson battcars, what drill size did you use?
Was it 4 mm diameter in the centre hole?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason I ask is that I have bought the 4 last battcars from Rutgerson, 2 that fit perfect with wheel size 24 mm (1520-11-06) and 2 that I need to do the similar improvement as you did (1520-11-01 wheelsize diameter 14 mm).
According to the service minded person I spoked with at Rutgerson will they not manufactore the battcar model 1520-11 due to costreason.

The mast profile I 330 on the attached picture do almost have the same dimension in real life, the "F" is 4,6 mm on our mast, Hanse 342.

Stefan,

The drill size could be between 4 and 4.5mm, I don't remember the exact drill size. Too bad that they don't sell these anymore.

The picture is hard to see. I had those rollers made. There made is of teflon that is resistant to sea water. Did not know that exists.

If you have an questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi All,

since i ordered a 375 last september and am awaiting delivery, I'm reading a lot on this forum. When i see the difficulties to hoist mainsail, i'm wondering if the MDS mast sliding cars, included with the optional cruising pack, are an adequate solution to these difficulties. (i guess the option figured already on the option list of the 370 ?)

I have a 370 from 2006
In the beginning it was almost imposible to hoist the main sail .
I have no battencars and al the sliders are simple.
Now I do spray 1 or 2 times a year with teflon spray and I think it is OK without the battencars.
Wenn I once order a new mainsail ( in about two years from now ) that will be a laminate sail wich will be much lighter in weight it will also become easyer to hoist.
The mainsail including battens is about 35 kg heavy .
That is also heavy to hoist.
Succes , I am glad I did not buy the battencars (cost about 1200 Euro )
greetings Marcel

The first season I had to use the winch for at least 1/3th of the way up. Also when letting the sail down I had to help it the last part by hand. I found out early last year that this was caused by the tension on the backstay. If I take off most of the tension I can hoist by hand almost all the way up and when I release the sail it comes down all the way without help.

Regards,

Ron

Hi,
I owned a 40 footer before MMBW Nicole. I could hoist the mainsail by hand almost to the top. IMHO three things are important :
1) To wash the track and cars with lots of water at least once a year.
2) To inspect and replace the cars if they show any kind of wear. I never lubricated them!
3) To hoist the main from the mast, not from close to the winch. The halyard passes through lots of blocks and double force is needed when you hoist it this way.

I completely agree with your point 3, I can hoist the main on my 370 completely by "sweating" it at the mast. All that is needed is someone to pull through the halliard in the cockpit and to apply the final tension.
