Hi,
I have recently purchased a Hanse 345, manufactured in 2015. I have noticed that the drive shaft appears to remain engaged with the engine when in neutral. I understand that the drive shaft is normally electrically disconnected from the engine. Does anyone have any experience of this or any ideas what might be causing the problem? Thanks.

Hello Martin,
there is no electrical connection between engine and saildrive, it is solid mechanics. If you don't have a folding prop Volvo advises to put gear in reverse when under sail.

You are right for the Yanmar saildrive, there are some posts describing the clutch problems on the Yanmar saildrive. Freewheeling the prop apparently let the cone clutch wear much faster, resulting in a complicated and expensive repair. His boat is from 2015, so I assume that he has the Volvo D1. The Volvo manual specifies:

Hi Frank,
Thanks for your response. The issue i'm experiencing is not when sailing but with the engine running and selected to neutral the prop still appears to be being driven by the engine.

Martin,
in this case something is wrong, your cone clutch does not open. What is the speed in calm water if the engine is idling ( ~850 rpm )? BR |
