Hi Johan Regarding your biocide free paint, I just had Freya lifted on the hard. After one year in the brackish water in the Baltic Sea, I could count the barnacles on one hand. All were hidden in the cavities in my bowthruster. I have told this story before, but it is so good that it has to be repeated. 12 years ago I got tired of my self-polishing Hempel paint which was originally delivered from Greifswald. Every year barnacles all over, so the colour of the paint was hard to notice. Having heard, that chili was a good barnacle repellant, I chose to give it a try. First I removed the soft paint down to the primer. Then I painted with Hempel epoxy primer. After this I used 70 grams of chili powder from the supermarket per liter HEMPEL Hard Racing. The Chili was soaked in Hempel thinner until it had a consistence like the paint. After stirring it good, it went into the paint, and a good stirring followed. For more than a decade the chili has kept barnacles at bay from Freya´s bottom, and even on the S-drive Hammerite (or another hard paint) and chili is useful. I buy the hard antifouling where it is cheapest, and some years I have bought another brand of hard paint from svb.de. If you sail in swedish inland waters, try to mix chili in an approved hard paint. Remember, that copperpaint must not come near the aluminium rudder shaft (or S-drive). Make a copper-free zone on the rudder near the alu, and a zone around the rudder bearing. Read Jefa homepage. :Kjeld

Hi Kjeld,
That's very interesting! I however assume that you need to apply it every year for it to work? Johan |

Not every year, a new layer of chili-filled antifouling every second year is enough for me. This week I just have cleaned the hull with a high pressure washer. Some years ago I had the boat in the water for 3 years, and then quite a few barnacles had moved in. I will post a photo later.

Dear Johan
I'm so sorry to learn of your legal struggles. I haven't been involved personally in such issues but I know others who have. Really quite dreadful. You have brought so much pleasure to your many friends on MyHanse - not least sharing your family adventures - including those with your daughter (and Stampe!) that it seems somehow unfair that you are caught in this situation. I really hope that your case is progressed without further delay and that justice prevails. And that your arm soon heals. With very best wishes Richard |

They say that ginger is good for sea sickness Perhaps if you mixed some in with the chilli it would protect everyone on the boat from getting sea sick. Then you really would be on to a winner

Thanks for the advice Samuel , you may use it yourself if your Corona-cancelled trip to Holland will be realized. When I hijack Johan´s thread a little, it is also to acknowledge his numerous contributions to myhanse through 15 years. We have missed the reports from Emilia the last few years, where Johan had other more important personal things on his mind. I have recently mailed a long PM to him to show my concern and support. As promised, I post a few pictures of my barnacle-free bottom (calm down, it is just the hull of Freya). I have pressure-washed the hull for the 20 minutes allotted time, and some green deposit still can be seen on the keel. The waterline also was a bit green, but a couple of hours with Biltema´s metal polish corrected that. (Try it - it removes all kinds of deposits). I have chosen to antifoul the boat every second year, and surely there will be a bit more barnacles next year, when the chili is loosing some effect, but the work and money saved made the choice easy. The S-drive, the propeller and the area near the rudder-axle (no copperpaint allowed) have been a
challenge. Last year I used Hammerite (well, I bought a cheaper
copy-product), with more chili than in the copperpaint, and it has worked fine. Not a single barnacle. Edited by Captain Cook - 06 July 2022 at 09:41 |

Thanks for your words, Richard. I myself think is is unfair. And not just to me, if you see what I mean.
Your message was much appreciated, Kjeld. Thanks! Now, on a lighter note, despite a broken arm I have managed to sail some 50M with my new rudder and will soon sail some more. The first impression is overwhelming but I will make sure to have sailed a little more before I come to conclusions and write about it. It has been really exciting to compare the old and the new rudder in my garden at home. Their foil shapes are very different. Johan Edited by Johan Hackman - 06 July 2022 at 17:39 |

Emilia is currently on the move. This time we are merely cruising the Stockholm Archipelago but I reason that not every year can look the same. I usually go further but this time it is going to be my home waters.
I am glad that a broken arm has not prevented me completely from sailing. At the beginning of this month I had planned to crew yet another time on my Norwegian friend's Dufour 34 across the North Sea between Norway and Orkney but while I had to cancel that I still joined him to sail from Egersund to Skudeneshavn, a approximately 50M along the West Norwegian coast (I am sure a few members in this forum are familiar with this stretch). Once there I got to meet all the friends and enjoy the Skude Festival. One thing I particularily enjoyed once again was to steer my friends Dufour 34 which is wheel steered and compared it with steering with at tiller which is what I am used to on my boat. Did I make the right choice when I ordered my boat? I think.... yes. The Dufour 34 S/Y Bua prepared in Skudeneshavn to race across the North Sea to Kirkwall in the Convoy Cup |

The next short trip was actually just to replace the (fourth under warranty!) wind sensor. With my arm I am not able to climb the mast so I decided to spend four days to get back and forth to a good mast crane where a good sailing friend keeps his boat and could help me doing the climbing. I would at the same time get four days of nice sailing and for this I invited another completely inexperienced friend to join me. It went well and the cooking was delicious!

The solar panels I got two years ago was replaced under warranty already after one year because they were giving to little power. This year the power gradually decreased again and after addressing this I was yet again sent another two panels I have not yet been able to mount. Together with the wind sensor problem I am getting a little frustrated. Why can't the stuff one buys for dear money last? If anyone has any thoughts about this, please let me know. (I used to have a B&G 608 wind sensor but later a B&G WS310 and the panels are Sunbeam.)
Now, fate had it that one of the pets aboard fouled the bed sheets on a bumpy sail into the wind so we had to find a harbour where we could use the laundry room and so we went to Bullandö where on the very day 17 years ago Emilia was launched the very first time. We had lunch on the restaurant and many mixed emotions came and passed. Johan Edited by Johan Hackman - 30 July 2022 at 21:40 |
