This picture could have cost me my drone. It stopped flying forward so Emilia sailed away from it leaving it invisible behind. The only way to retrieve it was to sail back and the only way to find it was to look at Emilia on the display and sail in the direction where she would appear to get closer. When the drone was found I tried to sail so that the drone ended up in the cockpit but it got stuck with one of its legs on the guardwire. Hangning there upside down for a moment it fell - on the deck and not into the water!
Now it seems to fly well again so maybe I will try more "flying camera photos" in the future. Johan ![]() Edited by Johan Hackman - 03 July 2024 at 07:55 |

It has been annoying me that Emilia sails differently on each tack. She sails extremely well on one and terribly on the other. I have lost my confidence as a sailor.
Then I thought that maybe the wind sensor is not quite mounted exactly at zero degrees, even if it is not detectable to the naked eye? So I set the offset in the instruments to 5 degrees and all of a sudden Emilia sails fantastically on both tacks! My conclusion is that in fact the wind sensor is mounted a little off side. Has anyone else fiddled with the offset like this? When I reached Kalmar, which is one of the bigger towns along the coast, we got some bad weather with high winds and rain and what better than to stay in harbour and read? For that I have bought two books written by a fellow forum member and 371 sailor. I have already read his book "Tiger and the robot". Well recommended! After five days (!) in Kalmar we got nice weather for sailing so yesterday I sailed to Konstantinopel. The small harbour was packed and Emilia was the fourth bout rafted alongside. After dinner I decided that I didn't want to get up early so I moved outside of the harbour and anchored. Not at least the cats were happy since when we anchor they can stay out on deck at night. In a harbour I would fear that they would venture ashore.

I just realised that since I got to Kalmar I have been sailing on my own with the two cats as my only company. I cannot remember the last time I spent that amount of time sailing single-handed but it sure is more than a decade ago. It has however been a good experience and I have had to brush up my skills on handling the boat alone. It also reminds me how easy handling the 342 is when you have the right setup. Main and jib sheets in the cockpit is just one example of what makes handling easy.
I continued to sail south in nice weather until I reached the most southeastern part (a place called Sandhamn) where I decided to head north again. With a strong wind from southeast I got seas that had all the way from Poland to build up and that made for a day of fairly tough sailing. The cats actually showed that they were scared. But the funny thing is that when after a long day of sailing we entered the harbour Mörbylånga and everything calmed down you couldn't tell that they had experienced the tough sailing. They were just waiting for their food to be served. Johan ![]() Emilia in Mörbylånga |

After a day's rest we continued north in some really nice weather.
![]() Leo We went to a small place called Timmernabben. ![]() The evening was nice but during the night it started raining heavily and the rain continued for the entirety of the next day. I didn't even stick my head outside and spent the whole day reading in my bunk. Johan |

Last time I flew my flying camera I nearly lost is. When I took the below picture the other day I also nearly lost it but this time not only once but twice. First I realised that the reason that I couldn't drive forward was that I was not logged into my account and the there was a range limit of 20 metres so I had to go back and fetch it. When I then tried again the batteries in the remote control went flat and I had to go back and fetch it again. ![]() I also filmed a bit and here is a "blooper video" from when I tried to retrieve my flying camera for anyone interested: https://youtu.be/C9_1vYejiC4. This resonates with me Johan.
I lost my DJI Mini in the German bight, 3 years ago. Sailed away, drone nicely followed but at max distance returned to home point (where we started). Was able to return to it and fly it back but when I almost grabbed it, it hit my flag and crashed into the sea. It died from salt water ingestion. Been looking at the latest mini 4 pro, but it became so much more expensive, it’s hardly a toy anymore. Although now with obstacle avoidance, so perhaps a new one would survive my clumsy piloting. It is very cool to see your own boat sailing and from high up. Nice pictures! Peter

Back in my young days I studied photography 3 years at night school with a prize-winning danish photographer (Ib Renard). I had a very expensive Contax RTS with plenty of Zeiss objectives and all the necessary tools for making my own black/white and colour (cibachrome) photos. I must be a slow learner, because my photos never became as professional as Johans. Nowadays I have a much cheaper Canon EOS800, seldom used, because the iphone or my pocket-size Nikon 3100 are easier to handle. The old iphone has been used for this photo: It is a copy of a coin from very old viking age. It shows the God of the Sea, Freyr with the Holy Horse. Freyr (and the Goddess Freya) are children of Njord, a Vane God of the winds. The text in runes "LaukaR" is a magic formula to protect the boat against danger. The observant rune-reader will notice, that the last rune is "Algiz" ="z". This, and the fact that the runes are upside down, and connected by a line, makes them magic runes, and the Algiz (Elk) rune is a token against all dangers. The decals for Freya cost me 8€ each. -So now Freya is protected against all evil! ![]() Edited by Captain Cook - 26 July 2024 at 22:38 |

Mine is also a Mavic Mini. I am sorry to hear yours died. It is way more difficult to fly a drone from a boat than from land. Both the drone and yourself get confused about what is stationary and what isn't. So you and the drone will disagree whether the boat is the home port or not. Johan |
