Hello all.
Just took possession of a new 458 and learning the ropes of it currently. Two questions:

1) Anybody have any problems with the engine compartment vent fan? Currently mine isn’t working at all. I’ve tracked down fuses and not found any that are blown.

2) Anybody know where the GPS antenna is located? B+G diagram doesn’t really nail it down and I haven’t located it yet.

Congratulations on your purchase!

I haven't had a problem with the engine fan. It is on all the time that the engine is switched on (but not necessarily turning).

As for the B&G antenna mine is on the transom on the port side as I recall.

I hope you enjoy your boat as much as I do mine.

Thanks Richard.
We are enjoying it; sitting on her as we speak. Still haven’t found the GPS antenna. Looked all through the stern cabins and behind and the cockpit lazarettes as well. They hid it well.
My engine vent fan just doesn’t work at all. I was just wondering if anyone might have had that similar issue with a good starting point for the investigation.

Hi Mike,

We had a problem with the engine fan on our 350, it took a while but I eventuality tracked it down to a fuse located under the chart table. The problem was that the fuse hadn’t actually blown but there was corrosion on the fuse holder which because of the limited access was impossible to see.

Good luck

Hi, in my boat it was not functioning and I found out, tracing the wires, that there's no fuse but a relay located near the battery charger

Thank you guys. I had my head under the chart table today looking at fuses. Couldn’t find any obvious issues. I guess it’s going to be a project for an electrician.

Certainly the fan circuit is energised by a relay when the engine ignition is turned on, but I would be really surprised (and concerned) if the fan is not protected by a fuse or a trip.

On High Time the fuse for the engine fan was fitted in the wrong fuse holder. The fuse holder is located on the panel under the chart table (on my 415). You will need the circuit diagram to locate which fuse it should be. Mine was in a cluster of 3 fuse holders at the top right hand side of the panel. The fan fuse was a red 10A spade and was the only fuse fitted in the cluster of 3. If you have the same problem, just move that fuse to the correct holder and it should work when the engine is on. It is quite noisy.

I suspected that wrong fuse issue. I switched one to a different slot. Didn’t work. I think maybe the actual relay is bad.

Thanks all.

Update with some discoveries.

Finally fixed the vent fan. Turned out there were two issues: one was that, just like was mentioned, there was a fuse in the wrong slot - a different one than the one I tried before, of course. Also, there was a bad wire from the engine control panel to the relay on the DC panel. We had to run a new wire, which was an adventure in tearing things apart.

We (electrician and I) eventually found an empty black corrugated plastic conduit about 1.5” wide (biggest one) that runs from the aft compartment behind the aft port cabin under the bed and under the hanging locker. The electrician discovered the false bottom in the hanging locker which I had never seen before. There’s a break in the conduit there. It then runs forward under the head to the back of the AC panel where the outlet is completely hidden behind all of the wires and cables. There was no mousing line running through it and it was very difficult getting a chase tape through it because of the right angle turn from floor up. A slow turn with a drill did the trick. It has a mousing line through it now. That could have been designed a whole lot easier. I now know how I’ll run cables for the bimini-mounted solar panels when I get around to that project.

We pulled the nav table chair up looking for a cable run. THAT wasn’t easy. Those bolts are lock-tight in place and very long.

I also discovered an electrical outlet under the forward, narrow wooden panel beneath the mattress. The water heater is plugged into that instead of being hard-wired. Seems like an odd approach, FWIW.

Oh, and I did find the GPS antenna. It is in that aft compartment behind the port cabin. You can’t really see it because it’s up high kind of hidden away around a blind corner. Amazing that it picks up a signal from there.

Hope that saves somebody some time and effort not ripping apart the cabin.
