When sailing with small crew (kids on board) a bow thruster would be a desirable feature in small harbors in Scandinavia. I am not sure if a tunnel thruster will do it on a flat bottom hanse 371 hull... I therfore think this external thruster sounds tempting. It is simply to mount, does not require large hull openings and the water resistance should be rather low. Does anyone have experience with external thrusters? Does anyone have a guess if a 2.6kW / 62kgf is strong enough (not for stormy conditions)? thank you for your help! SX50S Hydropod / 2,6 KW / 62 kgf / max. Rumpfdicke 50mm |

I have the Exturn 95 (3,0 KW), and I would not choose a smaller model. See: |

I also have the exturn on my 345, factory installed. Here are my 2cts compareed with my neighbours retractable RMC thruster on his Hanse 400.
1) very easy and fast to install ( less than 1 day ) , lower cost than retractable 2) very efficient, no turbulent water flow therefore increased power compared to a tunnel thruster 3) VERY silent, one of my neighbour on the same dock always wakes up half of the marina when he leaves at 6 am 4) works flawlessly since 7 years, 1st battery 90 Ah AGM via a Sterling bat to bat charger¨ 5) have joystick at the helm, and also a remote wireless combination for Exturn and anchor winch 6) drag not noticable when we sail with other 345`s My neighbours in the berths left and right say they do not hear me leaving the dock. My neighbour with the retractable has minimum one failure every seaon. BR Edited by Fendant - 06 August 2020 at 22:32 |

I am planning to add a Side Power EX55 to my 348. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind advising:
1. How much power does yours generate, and is it sufficient for ordinary conditions? 2. Any problem with mounting re: the water tank? 3. Any problems with running wiring from the thruster to the helm? 4. Is the remote reliable enough to forego the hard-wired controller? Thanks in advance. Mark

Hello Mark,
I have on my 345 the external thruster ordered from the yard since 2013 and I am more than happy. It is very efficient and does not loose efficiency due to cavitation like so many tunnel thrusters. Most astonishing is that it is superquiet, it does not wake up my neighbours in the marina left and right, whereas a Southerly RS 42 5 slips away wakes up the whole pier, when they leave. In direct comparison with another 345's I can not detect any negative influence on boat speed while sailing The reason, that I had to choose the Exturn was, that the 358/345 does not have enough room in front of the watertank for a retractable one. Mine is neatly nstalled there with a separate 90 Ah AGM charged from the house bank. I have the original remote wireless and the joy stick at the helm station. I do not want to miss the joy stick in tight harbors. I hope that there is also empty conduit from the bow to the nav station on the 348. I added a connection to the anchor winch to the exturn wireless sender, this is very useful during rasing or lowering the anchor. If you PM me yor e-mail, I will be happy to share some fotos BR Frank

We have just added an exturn thruster and it has been great. The space forward of the water tank is perfect for holding the battery or batteries. I have not noticed any problem with sailing or motoring performance. |

We have had our external bow thruster (Side Power SX50) on our 348 for a 2+ week trip into Hardangerfjord. It has made for stress-free docking and departure from all manner of harbors. Works beautifully and makes me appear to be extremely proficient at the helm. No noticeable impact on sailing or motoring performance. Easy installation and well worth the cost.

the external bow thruster is now installed and it works perfectly... however the effort spent on installation a mounting plate for the batteries and the effort to bring all the cables (hidden behind furnitures) to the bow was quite high... so lets hope it works for a long time :-) Edited by inspiron - 12 June 2022 at 21:43 |
