Hi,

I have a Hanse 400e, 2006. Does anyone know the location for autopilot fluxgate compass? I have old Simrad AP25 conroller, but can,t find the compass.

In my 2005 370, it’s in the fore cabin left wardrobe mounted at the top inside. I believe the early 400s are the same.

Hope this is useful

Mine is a later 2011 400 so possibly different.
The Fluxgate compass is in the locker below the wardrobe in the port aft cabin - down low on the bulkhead between the cabin and the heads.

...and mine was originally below the electrical panel on the port side.  When the system was upgraded a new shielded compass was placed in the locker underneath the port-side forward seat.

None of which really helps poor Siriuss at all as it seems they could be anywhere!

This is like pin the tail on the donkey. As White Leopard is a relatively early 400, I’d start and look under the electrical panel. When I upgraded mine, rather than placing it as far forward as my existing one, I mounted it on the side of the heads sink as the best compromise of close to the boat’s pitch centre and distance from magnetic influences.
Good luck with the search and let us know where it turns up.

Found it! It was in front cabin, top of the port wardrobe. Amazing that I have owned the boat from new, made all maintenance by myself but haven’t ever seen that. And I even keep my personal clothes in that wardrobe🙃

So the compass is RFC35, I’m planning to replace it with something better. But I’m afraid the old AP25 doesn’t go with many options. At least I could use RC36 rate compass, has anyone any experience if that improves autopilot operation compared to RFC35 fluxgate? Or any other options?

That’s exactly what I did. I installed a RC36 that I got on eBay and retained the RFC35 as backup. As mentioned earlier, I located the RC36 on the rear face of the heads sink. On my 370 that seemed to be the best location for closeness to roll and pitch centres, if also made connections to the AC10 very easy for me. As regards performance, once set up the boat tracks better, especially when going down wind. The RC36 is a rate compass unlike the RFC35. There is a very good post on the subject on the forum, when I find it I’ll post a link.
