new owner, and new to sail drive. Can some describe their method for locking the folding prop when sailing. Do you put the throttle in reverse and when, do you need to engage the red neutral button?

Hi, welcome to the Hanse forum, I hope you find it as helpful as we have over the last 7 years. To assist people in their replies it is easier if you state your boat model.
For a folding prop, I think the general consensus is put it in reverse when sailing. Basically you are trying to encourage the prop to fold up and not have the engine turning over whilst off. The red button is very useful when you need higher revs without moving! I.e. to get the alternator to start working, on Night Train our alternator needs at least 1500 rpm to get started. The other time we use the red button is when using the anchor windlass as this requires a lot of power. Good luck with your new boat and happy sailing Paul

just click it back into reverse, no need for the red button. That will keep it locked nicely. I sometimes skip it back into neutral when sailing up the river or in confined spaces just in case I have to suddenly start the engine

Yes, just as the previous posters say, into reverse (no red button).
One addition, however: when turning the engine off, quite often the saildrive stops in a position where I can't put the reverse in. Then I just leave it be and assume that the prop blades have folded away anyway. If I put the reverse in quickly after I've turned the engine off, it works most of the time. I guess the prop spins for a short while before giving up :) Edited by mglonnro - 09 May 2021 at 13:00 |
