We have just bought a three year old 315. In the documentation, there is a serial number, manual etc for a NAIS 500, and it shows up on the devices list on my chart plotter as well. However as the previous owner did not have a radio license nor an MMSI, I suspect it was never configured.

Unfortunately I cannot find the module anywhere on the boat. It is not behind the switch panel, it is not at the forward or aft end of the port cockpit locker, and I could not see anything when peering towards the engine switch panel an autopilot controls via the starboard aft access hatch in the aft cabin. Any ideas? Might I have to remove the chart plotter from the coaming or remove some extra panels around the switch panel or maybe the panel below the chart table? Truly puzzled. I need usb access to it to configure it.

So I can answer myself, in case someone in future has the same issue.  I found the antenna splitter and the NAIS 500 behind a panel below the chart panel.  It had no screws but simply pulled out, held in place by four plastic panel grips. The NAIS box had a USB lead already attached. I loaded the Navico NAIS configurator CD onto my laptop, and ran the configurator, loaded in the MMSI number, boat name, and a few dimensions locating the gps on board and saved the settings to the unit.  The indicator LEDs showed the power was on, it was receiving data, but the transmit LED was orange indicating that it was in silent mode. I 'generated' a diagnostic report which conformed that the unit was picking up my position from satellites, was receiving okay, but was in silent mode.  However, there was no toggle switch attached to the unit as shown in the manual.  I called Simrad who could not help but asked for a diagnostic file for the whole nav set up. A bit stumped but I decided to reboot the NAIS and that fixed the issue. The next report I generated showed the unit was no longer in silent mode and about 20 minutes later my boat started showing up on marine traffic< ="moz-extension://bfac3862-9637-4d08-8f31-d30080ffce61/js/app.js" ="text/">
