I have at long last found out why the mast on Morgelyn sometimes creaks. Tried pulling on the two shrouds which go to the mast just below the spreaders and hey presto it stopped.

Obviously they need tightening a little but the question is how do I know how much is enough and if I overtighten them is there a loud cracking noise followed by an expensive splosh?

Dominic was kind enough to suggest I take the boat to Plymouth for a check but the crew (wife) is not that keen especially if it means leaving sight of the marina!

Any advice appreciated?

Thanks

David,

I have just tightened my lower strouds for a similar reason - they will stretch and need adjusting over time anyway. I will be taking my boat back to Hamble to get the whole rig checked properly - I'm not the greatest fan of swinging around at the top of the mast ( bit of an understatement!) and it's best left to those who know what they are doing in my view.

All being well I should be in Falmouth week commencing 24th July - weather and time permitting I wouldn't mind helping you get the boat accross to Plymouth - Hardly a chore is it?!

regards

Graham

Thanks Graham

I spoke with Dominic again and he has given me the name of someone based in the marina where we are berthed so I will get them to do it. As you say better to get it expertly checked than do something silly!

I will PM you anyway.

the rigging on the 301 should be very tight. the lowers should have slightly less tension that the caps(make sure the backstay is off when feeling this) my advice is the tighter the rigging the better and always keep the backstay on witha little tension when tightening the lowers to stop them becoming over tight. its a bullet proof rig!!!
