I want to nag a little here about my Volvo Penta D2-75 engine aboard my Hanse 505-2016 (#114).
In the last 3 years i had to:
- replace the MDI-control unit
- replace the waterpump, totally corroded bearings and failing oil and water-locks..
- replace 2 injectors
- replace the saildrive propellor axle and gears (technically not engine, but still Volvo)
- replace the air-intake
and according to the interwebs i may expect the turbo to fail in the next year or so......

Now i noticed Volvo parts are expensive, so i started to dig a little and found out that:
Volvo D2-55 and D2-75 are basically Perkins 404 engines, and these are basically Shibaura N844L engines. Now the Volvo variant is probably marinized and such....but i am still wondering if parts like injectors and other fuel system parts as well as other "non-marine" parts could be bought much cheaper as Perkins or Shibaura parts. Perkins and Shibaura engines are build into tractors, wheel loaders etc. Parts are cheap and can be bought via agri/parts-webshops.
Anybody any experience with this?

Interested to hear if anyone has info on the spare parts issue.

Sounds like you had a bad time with your engine! The MDI should be covered by Volvo under recall, hope you didn't spend your own money.

How did you know the injectors were bad?

Please tell us more about the saildrive failure. Mine failed too, but the cause is clear. The previous owner had a shade-tree mechanic replace the clutches in the South pacific without hauling, just moving engine a little out of the way. He put the input shaft seal in wrong, and it quickly leaked oil. A delivery crew didn't notice the oil leak in time, and the drive ran without sufficient oil for some time. So I was not surprised when I had it pulled and inspected that it needed to be replaced. What happed to yours?

When my turbo fails, I'm going to just take it out and effectively convert to a D2-55. I think the engine is too powerful for the boat, and it makes me run at too-low rpm to keep the turbo happy.

Oh. One part that definitely is available from Perkins is the oil filter. Perkins 140517050 is the same one sold by Volvo, but Perkins sells for much cheaper, at least in the USA.

Perkins sells for $6.21, and Volvo sells for about $22. I've compared them, and they are obviously the same filter.

I haven't personally tried yet, but I'm pretty sure the fine fuel filter is a Perkins 4429491 for $12, though I tend to use the Wix 33386 for $12 because they are available more places.

The MDI was replaced by a Volvo Penta dealer, for free, when i had him do some maintenance. I never received a message from Volvo about the issue, the mechanic told me it needed to be replaced. All the previous (Volvo Penta) mechanics that i hired for maintenance never said a word.....nor did my Hanse dealer.

Injectors: Now i am not a diesel specialist by any stretch of the imagination but...... i noticed that when the engine runs idle, the engine shakes extensively from left to right on its mountings. When you unscrew one of the high pressure lines to an injector and the engine rpm's or behavior does NOT change....that injector is bad. I could loosen 2 high pressure lines (not at the same time, but one after the other), the third made the engine stall......hence 2 faulty injectors. This was only noticeable at idle rpm's, as soon as the rpm's where increased....the engine became stable and all was fine.... The cause is probably bad fuel, or water in the fuel (although i don't understand how this could pass the water separator filter). I will replace the faulty injectors next week with Perkins/Shibaura injectors (80 EUR) rather then Volvo Penta injectors (200+ EUR).

Saildrive: Well....its a long story and maybe something for a different thread. But the essence of it is that my saildrive propeller axle was dismounted and remounted by Hanse or Volvo prior to delivery. There is an oil drain plug in the bottom of the saildrive which is supposed to have a 2-3cm long magnet. If you remove the propeller axle without FIRST removing the oil drain plug...you WILL break the magnet from the plug, which will then start to live its own life between the teeth of the gears in the saildrive....
Total damage almost 2000 EUR....including new bearings, axle, etc. etc.

Turbo: Well, before you remove the turbo...read this thread and let me know what your opinion is: https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/ot-removing-turbo-turbocharged-diesel-319943/

What i understand from this is that the engine should run at high rpm every now and then, and the turbo should be cleaned often or it will fail on you.....

After a little further investigation i found that even the turbo is a standard Shibaura/Perkins turbo. New 800,- Eur (Shibaura/Perkins), refurbished 300,- Eur and ................2250,- Eur from Volvo.

Would it make any sense to make a cross-reference list with Volvo - Perkins/Shibaura part numbers for the most common parts like filters, injectors, turbo, waterpump etc. etc????

Oh, man. A cross reference list would be amazing. I had a hard enough time coming up with part numbers for oil filter, fuel filter, and water separator.

At least post the part numbers you have found so far.

I read the link you sent about removing the turbo.... Great link, thanks.  Honestly, it didn't put me off. Lots of people saying not to do it, but a lot of them seemed not to grasp that the engine is the same other than the turbo, and to have "car thinking" about how the engine works. The two most knowledgeable people in the discussion were the OP and dieselmechanic, and what they said didn't really make me feel it was a bad idea. I hate feeling like I'm hurting the engine when I'm only running 1700 rpm, I don't like the oil drip from the intercooler, I don't like wondering if the waste-gate is stuck shut again, and I don't like have to remove the turbo and clean off the carbon. If the turbo ever fails in a way that a simple cleaning doesn't fix, I think I'm going to delete it. Doesn't seem to make too much power difference until >2600rpm and I literally never run that fast except to exercise the engine.

My coolant pump for the inner circle on my Volvo D1-30F is leaking,
Our vacation is messed up. Cry
Volvo can not deliver it from stock in Europe.
They seem top be out of stock also in the US.
Volvo is not capable to tell us a delivery date.

I will post this is in the Hanse Forum as a separate thread. My only hope is
to find a Perkins/Ebara replacement.

d1-30 is actually a Perkins Perama M35 i think. In that case your waterpump could be obtained here…
