Aspects of my query have appeared in another thread but I have started this to deal with my specific problem. One of the cams has failed in the starboard bank of spinlock clutches. A local rigger has suggested he will have to lift the entire assembly. Unlike the port side where the winch and clutch fastenings can be reached from below, starboard side everything is enclosed by the headlining. 
I realise that the bolts securing these fittings are tapped into a steel plate so can everything be done from the deck? Am I being too cautious in wanting to see what is happening underneath the fittings?
Anyway, has anyone cut out an access hatch below deck? Has anyone had similar problems with a cam in the bank of clutches? Any advice as I try to deal with this would be much appreciated?

I can confirm that the spinlock clutches are screwed from the deck into an alloy plate.  There is nothing to see below decks.
I needed to change the cam size (many posts elsewhere about slipping halyards).  Needed to buy a big crosshead screwdriver (2015 boat, probably secured by Torx now).
Easy job to get the full bank off.  Some claim to have replaced individual cams without taking the entire bank off but I can't see how this is possible.

I have made an opening in the headlining. In my 348 there was a premade recess where i cut. Now making a hatch for that opening.

Thanks for these replies. Reassuring that the bank of clutches can be removed from above deck. Large screwdriver on order!
My 345 has a similar recess in the aft cabin headlining. It looks as though it is intended for an inspection hatch. However, it feels as though it is not in the right position. Does your opening give you sufficient access to the underside of the two winches and the clutch bank?

I’ve just done this job on a 418, replacing an individual cam with a ceramic cam (the difference is like night and day!). Easy to do and as mentioned above the machine screws just go into Aluminium plate, so no nuts / washers and nothing to see underneath. If you had any holding / slippage issues before the cam broke I’d strongly recommend a ceramic cam. It’s about £70 vs £40 but eliminated my problems

Not familiar with your model. I think i would have been able to disassemble in situ if the clutch wasn’t recessed into the deck moulding, because there want sufficient room to pull out the various bolts that hold the clutch bank together

Yes... I used the new inspection hatch to mount an electric winch and there is sufficient access to access the underside the clutch bank. I will also mount the brackets for the additional winches forward of the clutch bank will use this access. 

It's pretty much space under the winch and clutch bank. Before you make a hole you can inspect the area by removing the instrument (B&G Triton?) 


In the picture you can see both the recess and the aluminium plates for both the winch and clutch bank.

Really helpful photograph, Johan. I’m now planning to go ahead and cut an inspection hatch. 
Stuart, Matt any advice on changing the problem cam? I’ve never done this even on dinghy cam cleats. Is it straightforward?
