Sira,

We sailed for a month or more without realizing we had lost our first door. Sailed for some days without knowing our second door had disappeared.

It is safe to continue, but the doors need to be replaced as soon as possible to prevent growth and all sorts of other issues. This winter I had to complete replace the lower end of the bow thruster exactly because of this issue to the tune of EUR6000.

I've never had a problem, and have a lot of miles in all conditions. Perhaps I'm just lucky, but it might also have something to do with spending extra care and time to setup the thrusters door close procedure so that it closes tightly, but not so tight that the actuator struggles.

Nonetheless, when I go on multi-day passages, I tie the door up by looping a piece of dyneema line from the door actuator bracket and around the base of the motor, preventing the door from deploying.
