After having a wet spot in the guests cabine of our H 508, we detected the steering compass (Silva 125 FTC) on the deck console which was full of water(!) and must have been the culprit. The water then found its way through the locker into the cabin. We sealed the frame but had seconds thoughts whether it was the compass itself that wasn't waterproof. Ever met that?

When you say the compass was “full of water”, do mean water was inside the clear dome or simply around the black plastic housing?

The water was in the plastic housing, dripping out when we demounted it.The critical part of this issue was not so much the water in the guests cabin, but right below the compass lies the AP computer unit (NAC3), the loudspeaker, the galvanic isolator, the FI-switch for shore power and the socket of the network connections. And they were all wet and of course exposed to potential corrosion.

I see. Water should not be able to pass through from above the housing to the area below. I’m not sure how they create the seal, but I’m guessing it has failed.

My dealer suggested the water could penetrate through the small hole of the compass light cable. We will be watering the area and see if we sealed all correctly.
