    Posted: 24 June 2024 at 03:04
Good Morning All

My Stern Thruster has been out of action for some months awaiting some electronic component
My batteries have been disconnected for that time and are now showing 24.8v.When all is operational they show 27.6v.
So I have the following questions:

At what drop will I start to damage the batteries.
where do I find the charger and how is it connected.

The batteries are one year old and hardly used.
Any info would be much appreciated as per usual
Best regards to all

Normally the 24 volt charger is wired directly to the thruster battery. It is powered by the service batteries. Even with the thruster battery switch off. Did you disconnect the batteries at the battery terminals or with the switch?

Also, 24.8 volts is not bad but stored batteries should be kept at or near full charge. 25.6 volt would be better.

Hi Leon
Many thanks for your response.
The batteries are still fully connected.THe main red key switch is on.The key is locked in.
The usual voltage for the rear thruster is usually up to 28v.So this is why I feel they are not charging.
How do I Identify the charger wires into the batteries to check?
Cheers

There is a 10 awg red wire connected directly to the battery post or the switch. It has a 30 amp inline fuse. Check it. There is also a 30 amp inline fuse on the supply side of the charger located at the big DC power board.

In addition to Leon's fuse checking, I would also recommend checking that you have power leaving the Magic Charger.  It is near the big board, if you're not familiar.  There will be one for the bow thruster and one for the stern.  In my installation, the stern charger was actually the forward one.  Unless you are a dentist and good with mirrors or have the shoulders of 5 year old boy, you'll have to remove it from the mount to find out where to stick the probes.  My bow thruster charger did actually fail on me over the winter where there was a small, draining (not the thruster) load.  The charger is the cheap part (~US$320) ... the batteries ... not quite.

At present, not much.  The original owner did quite an overhaul of the boat's systems and the interior sometime around 2018 or 2019.  Among the many things, they installed a Mastervolt management system.  With a little software and a USB cable, I can look at each Mastervolt Li battery for its charge cycles, lowest historical charge, etc.  It also reports on the status of smart equipment (chargers and inverters), but only to the Mastervolt panel on the boat.  It doesn't report to the other systems or to me when I'm not on the boat.  The system is also equipped with a generator autostart relay.  When the house batteries drop below a certain level, it can start the generator automatically to top them off.  Since I don't live on the boat and am not quite comfortable letting the machines take over everything, I have disabled this ... but it might be nice for others.  By itself, I don't know that it is worthwhile, but maybe I'm not trying to get much out of it.

The Mastervolt system has a gateway module that shares battery levels, inverter status/loads, alternator status to Czone.  I really like Czone, particularly the modes where you can group loads and circuits (e.g., Sailing Day, Dock Attended).  I have to imagine that the rewiring of nearly every switched circuit must have been expensive and time-consuming.  I still have the AC panel, but my DC panel was replaced with Czone.

Building off the Czone installation, the 2nd owner added Siren Marine.  It only had some of the batteries monitored, which is how I wasn't able to see my bow bank was slowly depleting over winter 2022.  Since then, I've added sensors to all the batteries, added a entry sensor, bilge sensor, etc.  The sensors are bluetooth.  The bow bank is a little far, so occasionally that sensor drops its connection and then re-establishes.  From my phone, I can check battery levels, air temperatures at each sensor, and turn on/off circuits remotely.  For a mostly absentee owner like I am, it is really nice to have.  If you start to think it is expensive, compare it to the cost of (preventatively) draining your batteries, and you'll see it as a bargain!  You can either interface Siren to the NMEA network or just use a standalone sensors.

My 2018 is still basically stock in terms of electric. It suits me fine as I am on the boat regularly. All I need is the basic level monitors on the Wurth panel. Tanks and batteries. The Panda panel reports status  for the generator. I do need to pay a bit of attention since they don’t report to a central smart system. The newer boats are defiantly smarter, usually CZone, out of the factory.

i have installed the czone myself, when i added the mastervolt Lithium batteries and the MPPT for the solar panels. So, i've also installed the management system, because it was the only way to bridge the two and, most importantly, to program the MPPTs and the batteries to work correctly together. It was quite difficult to get assistance and guidance from Mastervolt because, obviously, they like their technicians to do it. But I finally succeeded with some trial and error on the communication protocols...Very stable now since 3 years of use. I am very happy with the solution and the lithium batteries are simply fantastic. Differently from Jon, i don't remotely control/monitor the boat...
