Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying some quality sailing. Towards the end of an extended trip this week, the fuse panel light f8 came on permanently and when I connected to shore power I was getting a red light instead of green and getting power through the 12v system but not the 240v connections. I suspect these two things are indicators of the same problem.
I would very much appreciate any help in tracing this fault.

Hi Majicol, 
The red light on the 240v panel suggests there is a reverse polarity in the 240v shorepower connection. If you were on an extended trip, I suspect the marina where you plugged in had the live and neutral reversed - not uncommon especially in France and Belgium from my experience because apparently local regulations do no stipulate that the fuse must be on the live only and most (not all) things work regardless of polarity.

The 12v system is not linked to the 240v so the flickering f8 is unlikely to be linked. For reassurance, my f8 light has flickered for years and whilst very annoying, is most likely just interference resulting from bundled wiring in close proximity and nothing to worry about.

F8 is a custom button, check if you have anything programmed on it, but if it flashes once every second or so, this means the fuse is blown. And Gregg is right about reverse polarity, it also happens in many places in Caribbean where they make 240V out of two opposite 120V, making both lines hot. Your boat however should have curicuit breakers on both lines, somewhere close to the shore power plug, maybe in one of the cockpit lockers. Nothing to worry about unless someone somewhere was messing up with your boat electrical and attached  ac neutral to dc negative.

Thank you for these replies. Yes, the 240v supply is again working and I suspect was caused by a problem connection in a marina we had visited the day before when we failed to get an electricity supply.
The F8 light remains a bit of a mystery. It has now gone out but it followed us using the usb charging unit and the 12v socket simultaneously. There certainly are several large bundles of wires behind the panel close to these units.
Anyway, we seem to be back to normal. Thanks again for the advice, information and reassurance.
