Dear fellow Hanse sailors,

I have a defect in the connector for my Handset VHF near the steering wheel. One of the pins of the male connector broke off.
How hard is it to replace the raymarine handsetcable? It needs to go from the VHF in the cabin to the back of the boat. Can I easily pull a new cable through? Or is it hard to do so? What is the length needed? Is 5 meters sufficient? Connector repair itself is futile I presume. Hope anyone has some experience with this
Greetz and many thanks

Assuming it’s not much different from my 400e, then the cable routes from the back of the navigation/electrics panel through conduits behind shower bulkhead into the heads and through under the basin. You can see the cables above the seacocks if you get low enough. From there it continues down port side and through the next bulkhead at the base of the wardrobe in the port aft cabin. There’s a hole in the fibreglass support for the wardrobe, and you can get your hand up and under to feel the cables coming through the bulkhead conduit. After that it routes under the bunk and out into the lazarette at the base of the rear bulkhead in the aft cabin. The final routing in the lazarette is likely specific to your boat and placement of your handset etc.

Difficulty of running a cable depends on how full the various conduits are.  If you’ve added an opening hatch below the black water tank, that gives much easier access for feeding cables through the awkward bit under the wardrobe. If you’ve added haven’t done that you will need to if you want to swap out black water hoses at some point. So worth doing anyway.

Good luck!

Many thanks Mark for your extensive description. Very helpful. I already have the extra opening. So it would be a 10 m cable i guess instead of a 5 m?

Kind regards

I think 5m would be only just long enough.  Get the 10m if you are unsure.

That said, there's nothing special in a handset cable and I'd likely extend one rather than buy new if the cost was prohibitive.  Especially as you can choose to add the 'extension' section below decks in the weather tight spaces.

Hi again. Taking advantage of the forum, do you know if it is possible to get the cable that goes from the radio to the microphone? It works well, but it is slowly falling apart because it is old and it would be nice to be able to change it... But I can't find where to get just the cable or just the cable and the microphone; I can only find the complete radio...
