Hi Guys,
I was sailing yesterday and the winch spat out a piece of plastic. Upon further investigation i can see it was from under the self tailing metal horn at the top of the winch (i'll attach some photos if i can work out how to). Has anyone had this happen? Can i buy the part and replace myself as im a bit worried about dismattling the winch as ive seen winches dismantled before and bearings and internals fly everywhere? Has anyone had this happen? Im in Sydney Australia. Thanks in advance. By the way its very difficult to upload photos can anyone help? Ive reduced size but still wont work |

Angus,
The images need to be smaller than 500kb to be pasted. These Lewmar two speed winches are not complicated and you should be able to check YouTube to see how its done. You should be able to source the replacement part in Sydney easy enough.

Sounds like you lost the line stripper. About $25 for two. Replacement only requires the top plate of the winch to be removed. 10 minutes.

To post pictures you need to press the post reply button just under the messages, then a new box will open up and the option then is to upload your pictures when you get to the point of the message where you want the picture to appear.
Winches should ideally be maintained every 1-2 years. Cut a hole in the bottom of a washing up bowl or cardboard box and slip it over the winch and that should catch any stray items. Follow the instructions or look at the YouTube videos and it is straightforward.

Hi Arcadia,
Is it called a line stripper? it sits behind the metal horn and links into the back of it. Now the top has sheared off it moves around where the rope is supposed to be jammed in in the self tailing area.

Yes. Once the part breaks it can spin and jam the line. Here is a link to a USA seller.
