My Volvo dealer reports my d2-75f turbo is locked up, again, and the waste gate is stuck, again, and it needs replacement. They were unable to service it. The Volvo part is roughly $3600 US (for a rebuilt one, no less).

Engine has ~2600 hours, engine still runs up nicely up to 2850 RPMs, I give it the Italian tuneup every few hours, but this design still develops issues every few years.

I've sent it off to a Turbo rebuilder for a second opinion, to see if it can be repaired.

I'm seeing what appear to be the same IHI OE turbos available for about 1/3 the cost of the Volvo replacement model, and these appear compatible with my D2-75F. Model is IHI RH4F-AS13

Anyone see any reason not to install an aftermarket turbo if it comes to that? Anyone install one?

I've seen the threads on deleting the turbo, but not interested in that rabbit hole presently. Like having the HP if needed.

Kipwrite,

I think the D2 is a rebranded Perkins (404 apparently). On the UK Part4engines website they show a IHI turbo for the 404 at $1412. https://parts4engines.com/products/perkins-404c-22t-turbo-charger-kit

Update:

I have confirmed the IHI turbo, roughly 1/3 the price of the Volvo Penta, is indeed exactly the same as the OEM save for paint color. It is installed, and working properly.

In the meantime, I was able to have the original one rebuilt, after sending it to a few different rebuilders. TIM'S TURBOS in Falls Church VA was able to free up the waste gate, replace the thrust bearing and the turbo wheel, for  half the cost of a new aftermarket version. His rebuilt turbo looks essentially brand new, and will live with my engine spares. Tim is good resource, reasonably priced, works quickly, and knows his stuff.

Two other US based rebuilders told me my old turbo  with a badly stuck waste gate, was unrepairable.

Volvo Penta D2 series is marketed by Perkins in joint-venture with Shibaura of Japan.

It is 'similar' to Perkins 404D-22, Shibaura N844L, Caterpillar 3024C, Caterpillar C2.2 but be aware these engines are sold in many configurations for different uses and markets so check part numbers carefully. Perkins claim to have sold over a million of these engines.

North America if struggling with Perkins parts, might be worth trying your local Caterpillar parts supplier.
