We are looking to add a furling gennaker, but will need to add a bowsprit to rig it outboard the jib furler. From what I've read, it looks as though I'll need to get one made (along with a bobstay to support it below) and while I've found a number of old posts on the forum on this topic, I can't find anything on the dimensions of the bowsprit. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

We had the bow fitting with the hole for the bowsprit already there/ready to go so I just used pictures on the internet to get the scale roughly then had it made up by a metal fabricator a bit long and cut it myself to what I thought looked appropriate. Very similar to the one in your photo. For the bobstay we removed the bottom bolt in the chainplate and replaced it with a ring bolt

Hi Pat - thanks for the reply. We have the same fitting at the stemhead and so like you, just need the bowsprit and bobstay. A ringbolt at the bottom of the chainplate is a good idea. I'll measure up the internal dimensions of the stemhead fitting to give to the fabricator, and then I think will have to guesstimate what length to make it. Long enough so the gennaker and its furler will be clear of the jib, but not so long that it creates excessive force on the whole fitting - I guess! Do you happen to know what length you went with?

Sorry I don’t remember exactly, but it was roughly 300mm protruding. But also our boat is smaller (342). We also did go for very thick-walled pipe, Sched 80 it might have been called in Australia, the thickest we could get that would fit, then packed it out with HDPE

I can recommend Stas from 'Latbros' of Hayling Island for fabrication. He's made various fittings for me including an arch, tent frame and anchor roller assembly and I was impressed by the care taken to discuss my requirements and to measure up before starting. He's a regular visitor throughout the Solent area so should cover Beaulieu. Be aware though that any s/s fabrication isn't going to be cheap....
Contact 07735 999092; mention 'Wight Leopard' and he (just might!) give a discount on the referral. The overall length of the part on mine is 34cm from end-tip. Iain

Hi Iain - thanks for the referral and for the details on you bowsprit. I'll connect with Stas and see what he says! I've also had a recommendation for Spartec Engineering on the Hamble. I did try to find a ready made / second-hand bowsprit but didn't come up with anything. I'm braced for a shock on the cost (which feels like the standard approach when doing anything on a boat!)

On my 370, I made my own bowsprit / gennaker pin which projects 600mm from the socket in the bow fitting. It is also supported by a tie bar to the stem of the boat. It works well and I’m very pleased with its performance especially as I also moved the spinnaker attachment to the mast head to maximise sail area. I’ve used this set up in winds up to 20kn. I’ll post photos later, which hopefully will explain it better.
