I am considring buying a 2007 Hanse 320 with tiller-steering.
Somebody told me, that it is a bad idea - because the boat is hard on the rudder - even though you trim the main and jib
Anybody have any experience with this?
Is there anything else I should look after - regarding the 2007 H320?
Thank You

Hi Peter.
Though I cannot tell you anything about tiller steering on a 320 I can tell you for certain that tiller steering on a 315 and a 342 is like heaven and the reaction is prompt. The boat is so well balanced and I would be surprised if the 320 acts very much differently. If a boat of that size is hard on the rudder wheel steering will not elimitate the forces and you just end up with bad trim. Give the boat some nice flatten quality sails and an effective cockpit traveler for the main sail and I believe the 320 will sail like a dream compared to other well-known mass-production brands. (the standard sails on most production boats are simply trash, just to keep overall price down and the Hanses are no exeptions in that area) /Steen |

It's when you steer with a tiller and not with a wheel. The woman in the picture is steering with a tiller.
I can only confirm what Steen said, the 342 is a dream to steer with a tiller. Johan

Hi,
My previous boat had a tiller .Except when running in force 7+ ,holding a spi, the tiller is easy to handle and you feel like sailing (compared to driving a bus). Even in extreme situations the tiller is better for boats under 36 feet. IMHO of course. |

Yes i love tillersteering.
I still do not understand why nearly all yards deliver wheelsteering already in very small boats. I think - as panos wrote- tillersteering under 36 feet is better, as you get more space in the cockpit and it gives you a better felling for your boat. BTW - this only works if the boat is well balanced.

I sail a Hanse 311 with a tiller and I like it. I think that boats under 37feet should be steered by a tiller instead of a wheel. This has to do with the amount of space left. To me a tiller gives me a more and direct feeling to the boat movements.

I'ts because many new boatowners have never really learned to sail with a tiller in a small boat and they feel more safe having a wheel which works like car driving. And it pays off for the yards. Other wise tthey would not sell small size cruisers. /Steen |

@Abstinez: You are right. I learned sailing in the 70th in a small Optimist as a child, later i steered a lot small boats in races like Laser, Hobie Cat, Korsar, 470, 420 etc.
So i am very used to it. It took me some time to get used to the wheel when we bought our Hanse 370 last year. The boat before the 370 was a waarschip 725 with tillersteering. I loved this boat, as it was possible to steer with one finger or only with your brain by moving only some weight (myself
Many people do not learn anymore on small boats. they start on "big" ones with wheel steering. So they do not know how nice it is to have a tiller.
