Hi
MD 2030 fitted to 2002 371.

To unscrew the square headed core plug near the oil filter to drain the coolant buy a 17mm 8 point socket from UKTools.com look at the Special Socket page. Note on normal Hex nuts you use a 6 point or 12 point socket.

On a Volvo 2020 MD you just reverse a half inch drive socket & it fits perfectly as it is square on a square plug
To turn it you can  use the correct size socket to fit your extension drive socket back to front & you can easily extract the plug You are just reversing the socket from its usual mode
If you do not have a socket that fits your drive then put a bolt in a pair of mole grips ( matching the bolt head to the corresponding socket of course)

Hi Gregor.
To flush the engine block, as Volvo recommend, you have to remove the drain plug. I'm also cleaning the heat exchanger but more on that later.

Hi Samual.
WRT the 2020. I'm surprised the 1/2" socket drive fits, by that I mean it engages the full length of the nut (which is tapered) without hammering it on and the corners of the nut are not damaged. My research is that the the nut is 14mm square, for those interested UKTools also do a 14mm 8 point socket.

My tip, in case you have emptied the motor, to fit a heat resistant hose with a spindle crane instead of the plug. This help to ease to empty the motor.

I have used the drainage five time and very happy with it. After having the engine running for half an hour, the oil is warm and very easy to remove because a small hose gets al the way to the bottom of the engine.

Hi Gregor.
I'm sure your English is much better than my Dutch but I think there is a little confusion here.

My posting refers to draining the green coolant (water plus antifreeze mix) not the black lubricating oil. More will become clear when I post some photos next week.

Luckily I've done more to the engine than just oil drainage :-)

Maybe these pictures can help you.
Installing the boiler

Those nipples on the MD2020d are 3/8" nipples, sold in any plumber shop and much cheaper than the Volvo ones.

BTW, I used the same pump to empty the motor from coolant.

wrt the 3/8" nipple. I assume they are 3/4" BSPT thread. I'll try to find some in the UK and fit one as a upgrade.

WRT the MD2030.
Proir to my engine variant they had a drain coolant valve.
After my engine variant they had a drain coolant valve.
But on my engine variant no drain valve but a big square nut. Thus the need for the 17mm 8 point socket.

Mine is 3/8", but that is measurement from Dutch plumbers. I don't know if hat is different in our country. I'm at the boat today, if you would like me to take a specific picture or to measure something, please let me know.
