I am thinking of buying a luff-furling Gennaker / Cruising Chute for my 350 Selene, probably the Crusader Sails, Poole, UK "Magic Furl" system.
Measuring up, the anchor retaining pin looks a tempting point for the tack shackle (there has to be enough clearance for the chute furling wheel away from the jib furler). On my Westerly Konsort I used to shackle the tack of the asymmetric chute to the anchor pin and it worked well. Using the anchor pin on a 350 would save the need to fit a mini-bowsprit and the slight offset to port should not matter much in practice. Has anyone tried using the anchor pin in this way on a 350? The stainless anchor chute and the retaining pin itself look strong enough. I would welcome anyone's comments or experience. |

I have a North G2 Gennaker which is not on a furler but is doused by a sock system on my 350. The tack is attached to a strop which goes through a block attached to a hole drilled through the stainless steel anchor shute. The Hanse agent has assured me that the chute is strong enough to take the pressure of the sail but we decided to use the chute itself rather than the anchor retaining pin.The slight offset to port is no problem. Generally the tack is set at about the height of the pulpit and the strop eliminates any offset issue. I also sail on a Hanse 400 which has a North Code 0 MPS on a furler but attached to a small bowsprit. You still have to go to the bow to operate the furler on that boat. In my opinion the gennaker I have is easier to use than the furler version.

Thanks Boswell. Very useful. I talked to North at the London Boat Show two weeks ago who were wanting to sell me a G2 with a sock. The only one they would do with a furler was a G1, and the range of wind angles on that is too small. I think with any Gennaker on a furler you have to go forward at least as far as the shrouds because you need to watch the sail coming in. I mainly cruise rather than race and I like the idea in light airs of furling the beast if need be but leaving it up ready to go again. The strop sounds like a very good idea. David.
