Hi
I have a new hanse 400 and as I usually sail with just my wife I really appreciate the self tacking jib, however I miss being able to lie hove too. Has anyone a simple method of achieving this with the self tacking jib? Regards Robert |

Hi Robert,
The process we use in our boat (a 411) is to secure the genoa sheets to the clew of the self-tacker (on the very rare occasion we actually use it). This will allow you to back wind the jib to heave to, and will also avoid the jib gybing itself when sailing off the breeze at more than 130 degrees apparent (as they are wont to do). I note from Johan Hackman's most excellent photos elsewhere on this forum that he has set specific control lines at the ends of the jib traveller to do a similar thing. We figure that when offshore by the time you connect the sheet to control the jib downwind, you might as well just use the sheet and dispense with the self-tacker altogether; after all, gentlemen never sail to windward.... Conversely, when sailing around the harbour we mostly use the self-tacker so you don't have to put your beer down when you tack. Happy sailing, Chris |

Hi Xenial,
we solved this for a different reason adding two trackstoppers which we could rig afterwards. We got these from Lewmar. Dont have a picture available but you can just slide these from one to the other side avoiding the selftacking car from running. Edited by TAIMA - 11 May 2010 at 22:44 |

I don't think my photos are that excellent since they seem to show things that don't exist on my boat. Instead of control lines I have the fore-mentioned trackstoppers that probably could be used to heave to, although I haven't tried that yet. Johan PS. The blue line going to the block at the end of the track in the picture below is the jib sheet which runs to one of the genua winches. Edited by Johan Hackman - 12 May 2010 at 08:43 |

Hi Gregor
Yes I did search the forum as I felt sure that this must have been brought up before but unfortunately found no mention of the subject, perhaps you could point me to where it is? Regards Robert |

Hi Johan
I spent an enjoyable hour searching through your photos for the aforementioned control lines and although I did not find the exact photo I did have a splendid time looking through the records of your excellent adventures. I have great difficulty getting my wife to go out onto the Solent early spring so the pictures of your ice breaking sailing were particularly inspiring. Regards Robert |

Ahh Johan,
Much joy and fleicitations - clearly I made a judgement on the basis of scanty information and though I was looking at a control line when it is in fact - a sheet!
Not to worry, correction noted and another post in the bag
Cheers, Chris |

Johan, Do you have the part number and/or manufacturer of the jib track stops in the photo?
