Hi all
I am going to do a repainting of my 470e and would really like to have it dark blue(Hanse grey today). I remember when I bought the boat that the Hanse people were warning me about dark colors and that the epoxy could go soft from the high temperatures. Now I am presently in the carabien and here i have seen quite a few shipman of various size, all dark blue or black. They are also epoxy hulls which make me wonder.
Is there anyone here who has any experience or knowledge of this?

Thanks
Peter

Paint it any colour except blue or red. They loose the colour over time since the pigments in those two colours are affected much more than other colours, by the sun. Just look at dark blue boats that are 2-3 years old. They look like the colour has died.

So unless you paint it every three years, avoid those colours.

I wouldn't agree of avoiding dark blue. Our Hanse 470 is now in the fifth season and she still looks like new. I think we had a good waxing procedure.

You know the Ricola commercial: "Wer hat es erfunden? Die Schweizer!"
I am Swiss and it's top secretWink . Just kidding; I don't know it, because it was always done by the laundry service guy of the shipyard. But maybe he tells me his secret mixture.

You guys are funny. But seriously they told me when imordered my boat that with a dark hull color the risk of the epoxy reaching it's maximum temperature of 150 C, was big, and that then it would get soft and loose it's strength. I never heard anything more about it, but I repainted the boat grey again just to be safe.

The boats that I have seen faded, have all been dark blue or red. When asking the owners, they all tell me that with time, the sun fades the paint.

Now, if you have been able to find a formula to avoid this, fantastic. I hope others will be able to gain from this experience and have nice and blue boats.

As for the dark painting ruining the hull structure, I don't know if that is the case. My boat is metallic dark grey and it has been holding up for 5 years now. Lets hope I don't have a problem in the future. Will keep and eye on it. Good to know that info. Thanks.

Atheina, Would you please post a picture of your boat? I am thinking about a paintjob dark grey metallic.
Do you know the paint type used - AWL?

Yes i used AWL. But i was advised against metalic. It is virtually impossible to Do touch ups on. I will try to take a picture later today and post. I took 3 parts AWL dark grey and one part AWL black. It's the same darkness as Hanse grey but a little more blue/grey. I personally am very happy with the result.

How about black? Does it fade too? And how about the price for 40-50 ft?
