I'm considering to place a VHF radio and Chartplotter in the cockpit of my Hanse 315, on the port cockpit wall as shown below. The rear of the instruments will protrude into the toilet/shower space.

Has anyone done this before on a Hanse 31X?
Does anyone see a particular problem with this placement (other than making holes in a very nice boat)?

Hi Frode

In my opinion the problem with your plan is that you are not able to operate either the VHF or the GPS from your steering position. Secondly you are properly not able to read the GPS either! And third - who wants the back of the instruments in the toilet room? Tongue

Here is what I have done in my Hanse 312.

The VHF is mounted in door next to the fuse panel. The VHF type Navicom RT 650 has a wireless remote handset which is used in the cockpit.

For navigation I use the new Garmin handheld GPS type Montana 650. This unit is mounted with a RAM mount like type.

Please see this link as an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4DYlYEbBrA

Then the GPS can be located anywhere in the cockpit - just next to you in order to read on operate the GPS during sailing.

For me it works fine - maybe it could also be a solution for you!!??
Regards

Peter

You cannot lean on the instruments when sitting in the cockpit as you will flex the displays . The 311 cockpit is not very comfy and the best place to sit is with your back to the bukhead
Do you not have an instrument bulkhead over the hatch garage?
You do not need a GPS in the cockpit . A repeater over the garage gives all the info you need. A hand held radio is handy if single handed,  my main radio is in the door of the electric cupboard. When calling a marina etc I just bring the handheld on deck

I would not do it.
A vhf could be placed in the locker at the nav-table.
And a remote for the VHF in the cockpit. Furuno has made a VHF with DSC/AIS for chartplotter. For the VHF there is also a remote with 200 meters range. This works for intercom, if one leaves the boat in harbour or by dinghy.

My Chartplotter is placed together with all the other instruments above the hatch.
I find it difficult to read the chartplotter, but plan to mirror the -/+ degrees heading/course to a second NMEA-display next to it.

The most perfect chartplotter with all forseeable features came-up (a B&G (Simrad) Zeus 7 Touch) at a great campaign offer, and I decided to do the flush-mounted cockpit installation through the toilet's bulkhead.

The walls are pretty thick, som I am not concerned with any weakening of the wall. For sunbathing or resting, I can attach my Blue Performance sheet bag over it to form a pillow, as before.

The chartplotter does protrude in trough the head's roof liner, with a rectangular cut-out. The cables I have led back to the large storage locker beneath the starboard cockpit bench. In time I'll probably place a white cover over the intrusion, and it may look nice.

I saw no other location as being suitable for my tiller-equipped 315, especially since in my use, I've had a lot of night-time sailing in coastal waters, alone in the cockpit. Electronic charts, navigation, AIS and autopilot control have been of great use and I need them to be close at hand - in the cockpit.

In our first club race with this plotter, we won Smile - probably not due to the plotter but to the new sails.

PS - The VHF got placed just inside the hatch on the port side's roof liner (visible in the picture), so that the VHF is accessible and visible from the cockpit, Bnd the cord extends easily into the cockpit. But it is not in the way of anything. It'll do for now.

I want to get AIS which would be next to useless below
I have thought of placing it an angled box right behind the tiller
There is a gap between the tiller & the aft moulding.
There is still room to open the locker hatches
Years ago dinghies had special angled grp footblocks to help push out onto the trapeze wire
These would be perfect
Anyone know if they are still available
