I'm scheduled to test sail a 505 and 575.    The 505 seems big enough,  but one item driving me to the 575 (outside of the usual "more") is the saildrive on the 505 vs shaft drive on the 575.    Saildrives have had a bad reputation with respect to galvanic corrosion and leakage from the hull/drive seal.    Its a big hole in the hull and the outdrives are usually made of aluminum (one of the least noble metals).

Has any 505 owner (or any saildrive owner) had any issues with it?    I realize that they put barrier coats on these things now, but you might not notice it until a few years go by.

Fingers crossed, no problems here.  Just hauled for bottom paint, no corrosion with Volvo sail drive.

I had a Volvo saildrive on my previous boat and had no problems at all in 13 years. I changed the hull seal after 10 years but, in common with every other Volvo saildrive owner, the old seal looked as good as new. The subject of the hull seal comes up regularly on other sailing forums (fora?) and never has a failure of the hull seal been reported to my knowledge.

Galvanic corrosion of the saildrive is also extremely rare and probably due to incorrect electrical installation of additional equipment after commissioning.

I had no qualms at all about having a saildrive on High Time.

Saildrives need some TLC though that's no different to the rest of a boat.  Mine (a Yanmar) needs an oil change plus good primer and aluminium friendly anti-foul each year, and after 600 hours I did need to change the propshaft oil-seals.  No big deal.  At some point I'll do the cone clutch & inner hull seal as planned maintenance.  That said, having sailed over 3000Nm on a 575 (UK to Turkey) I'd go for that option if I could get a decent trade-in on my 400 :-)  Still remember some epic 200Nm plus days on that run!

Rick,

These are two very different boats. I think a shaft drive would Always be favored over a sail drive for maintenance reasons and simplicity. But I think there are a lot more reasons to own a 575 over a 505 with the down side being cost of purchase of the 575 and additional cost of berthing. It really depends on what you plan to do with the boat.

Thanks for all the comments..    Its still something that I wish was available in "shaft drive", but I'll take the feedback as "not the problem I thought it was"...

The only drawback on the 575 is that the aft cabin is not a full owners stateroom.   The "garage" for the dinghy is OK, but I'd rather have a proper two-stateroom boat in something that size.

Rick,

I am from Newport also and have seen your boat. We currently have a Jeanneau 39i on a mooring near Ida. We just closed on Friday on a new 505 so will have it in Newport next year. Hopefully you will have one here also, or the Big Sister.

Hi Rick,
my 505 with Volvo sail drive has just over 1000 hours over 2 seasons and 10,000 nm .
She is now on her way to join the ARC and has no signs of any corrosion having been out of the water twice. She was repainted once and the Sacrificial Anodes were replaced while out of the water.
The world is what you make it.
