Hi,
Slightly daft question here, but I couldn't help noticing that my newly acquired '12 model 385 has a slight heel to the port when berthed up along the other sailboats in the marina.
No wind, no current conditions - Is this normal for this sailboat? My black water tank is on the the port side, but wouldn't have thought it mattered much, all things considered.
Not just in my head - If I put something round on the saloon table, it starts rolling straight awayBig smile

Hi
It would be good to know by how much is she heeling over? I put an inclinometer on mine when she was upright by a builders laser light on the mast in the dark at night. However, she occasionally heels over by just less than a degree to port for a day or three then upright for the next weeks. I would have put down to the beer and wine store but that's on the stbd sideLOL

This has been discussed before...use advanced search->any date...
I remember solutions ranging from moving heavy items like batteries to straighten the heel, to some old-timers debating the amount of beer or whiskey needed in the cupboards for straightening the boat.
There is a formula for straightening a heeling ship in books for the danish Yachtmaster (1) course. 16 years ago I made a project with a fellow sailor, using formulas which I will need to get from the old project, if I ever want to use them again. (The beer/whiskey method is funnier though!).

Fun aside, in a modern boat with a high freeboard and rigging and lazypack pushed by the wind, some amount of heel  may be expected.

If the engineers on Hanse Werft had done their job right, the boat would be level with full tanks and batteries placed wherever they should be.
Well, most boats are "almost" level, and a few may even be perfect.
My 400 had a few degrees of heel, but placing 3 extra 95Ah AGM batteries of considerable weight in front of the sink corrected that. The problem of the negative slope in the shower is not solved though. The search function can show a solution to this, but it is expensive and time-consuming.

Schjell - don't beat yourself up; the only stupid question is the one that you don't ask.  However, if you're getting stuff rolling off the saloon table on its own then that does seem a bit excessive.  Does the boat perform markedly better on one tack when going into the wind?  It would be very interesting to hear from owners who've installed Lithium batteries if that corrected any heel.

I presume you thoroughly checked the mast alignment and rigging tension on purchase?  I once helped a rigger check over a quite-young 385 and was appalled at the lack of tension that caused the mast to tilt slightly.  If the boat is new-to-you then I wouldn't just trust that the previous owner got everything right.

Seems to perform equally well on both sides when sailing.
Didn't check the rigging, not an expert but the rigging was "recertified" aboute four years ago with no findings, got a report on that. Think he had to do it prior to a ocean regatta to Shetland. Mast seems to be normal to the deck, so my best guess now is that it's the batteries and black water on the port and a 1/3 full diesel tank presumably on the starboard side. The water collecting behind head after shower is annoying, but merely a design flaw I take it from other comment here.

Even though the boat is very well kept it's starting to dawn on me that this is a new lifestyle, not just a part time hobby. Proper lazy jack replacement project tomorrow, repaired the retractable thruster that failed me yesterdayBig smile (Thanks to "cut a sensor wire" tip found on this forum!).

Thanks for all tips, for the future I'll try to trawl though earlier solutions prior to asking old questions!
