Hi Robert,

The process we use in our boat (a 411) is to secure the genoa sheets to the clew of the self-tacker (on the very rare occasion we actually use it). This will allow you to back wind the jib to heave to, and will also avoid the jib gybing itself when sailing off the breeze at more than 130 degrees apparent (as they are wont to do). I note from Johan Hackman's most excellent photos elsewhere on this forum that he has set specific control lines at the ends of the jib traveller to do a similar thing.

We figure that when offshore by the time you connect the sheet to control the jib downwind, you might as well just use the sheet and dispense with the self-tacker altogether; after all, gentlemen never sail to windward....

Conversely, when sailing around the harbour we mostly use the self-tacker so you don't have to put your beer down when you tack.

Hi Johan
I spent an enjoyable hour searching through your photos for the aforementioned control lines and although I did not find the exact photo I did have a splendid time looking through the records of your excellent adventures. I have great difficulty getting my wife to go out onto the Solent early spring so the pictures of your ice breaking sailing were particularly inspiring.
