Hi everyone,

I have just ordered a 385 for delivery early 2013.
At my wife's insistence I am having the 3 cabin layout but am worried about stowage space particularly for the dinghy.
I would be interested in other owners solutions? I am considering having Davits fitted but only if absolutely necessary.
Apart from that I'm still wondering whether to have extra winches fitted for cruising chute, has anybody got an opinion on this.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ray,

We have a 411 which we have cruised full time for four years. She has the standard Harken 46's in the cockpit. I looked at additional winches but decided against getting them - instead we got an assymetric spinnaker in a sock. We run a single sheet from a block secured by a strop from the aft cleat on the working side and use the primary winch for the sheet. This winch is not in use as the headsail is always furled prior to setting the spinnaker. If we have to tack the spinnaker (hasn't happened yet cos it would have been bad planning if it did) we just pull the sock down, and reset the sheet on the other side.

If you are interested in anything more than social racing, then you will need to fit secondary winches so as to be able to handle sails quick enough to keep the boat driving at racing speeds.

For the first year of our cruising we carried the dinghy upside down on the foredeck, and at night at anchor hoisted it out of the water to deck level on a spinnaker halyard. We eventually fitted davits as part of a substantial stern arch we later put on, as dinghies on the foredeck can be a bit of a pain. That said, when on long passages we usually put the dinghy on the foredeck as it was safer than on the davits. We got caught in a tropical downpour one night with the dinghy on the davits on and it filled up with rain water. At least we proved that the davits held up to about 800kg before the water drained out!

Hope this is of some use,

Cheers

Hello Ray,

Congratulations on your new boat.

Regarding davits -do not do it as you will ruin the lovely lines of your boat.  Find another solution. Does your dinghy have a soft or hard transom?  If you will not need your 3rd cabin often you might take out the cushions and store the dinghy there.   When I load up our 2 cabin 370 for our annual 3 month cruise I carry my deflated dinghy in front of the hatch garage (the liferaft rests under the helm seat).

For your cruising chute I suggest you use Spinlock BRS jammer blocks.  There is no need for extra winches.  For my cruising chute I use 3 jammers.  1 for the tack line, which I bring aft, and 1 each side for the sheets. From time to time I think about adding a jammer for the mainsheet near the port side winch to use when the wind is on starboard, but so far I have not bothered.

Regards

Ian

Hi,

I have the 385, and we store the dingy, and quite a large Zodiac 2.8meters Cadet fast roller, on the cabin roof under the boom it fits easily, ours is heavy so it takes two to lift it on and off. If you want to deflate it then there is a large stowage space at the back accessed from both quarter berths.

Thanks for that Jon, did you consider fitting Davits as your dinghies so heavy? Ray

I have a 370 and after a few years struggling with various tenders - I have a Walker Bay and a lightweight inflatable - I decided to fit a set of Plastimo davits over last winter. It was easy to do on the 370 (I'd already moved the bathing ladder) and they are removable when not needed. It has transformed how we use the boat for coast hopping.
Each to their own as to opinions on looks and sailing ability with weight at the stern, but I am happy with my fitting.

ours in the 3rd cabin. We have the 2cabin layout and are very happy with this. It allows us to store 3 foldable bycicles, the dinghy, extra anchor, ..., ...
First 4000 miles, no substantial problems

Hi Ray
I am a little jealous you ordered the 385, beautiful boatSmile
I have been looking at the 385 for awhile but recently decided on a 415, which stretches my budget to the max!
I was wondering what is possible regarding price break on the new Hanses. I've been going to the Amsterdam boat show the last few days to negotiate the best price possible. I have no idea if I'm in the "ball park" percentage/price wise, and was wondering if you could give me an idea of what are the limits (I'm assuming you spent some time negotiating).
I've been reading various forums and web sites and they mention 10-15% discount on a new boat, is this possible?
Any information and advice would be appreciated.
Best of luck with your new boat.

Regards

John

Hi John,

I think you are in the right ballpark, for a July order and 2013 delivery Inspiration Marine were I felt very fair and gave me about 12.5% for the spec that I have ordered, I got the impression that the higher the spec the better deal you can do. Have a look at their Southampton boat show offers.
