Hello all,

Has anyone redone the antifoul on their 385's yet?
I think ours came with a soft anti foul. After a good hull clean just before out atlantic crossing we've now got all kinds of growth on the hull so want to get it redone.

Any tips? What kind do you guys have? I'm looking for a type that will last me another season or two back to Sydney.

Regards,
Simon

Simon,

We used International Micron 66 on Hope and on other vessels in Australia with good results even in the tropics. It is a self polishing antifoul so you need to have the film thickness on to get the required results. I had a antifouling paint spec written by International listing the correct primers, coats and WFT (wet film thickness) which I will send to you by email. You need to make sure the shipyard or whomever is doing the painting sticks to the spec including the WFT. Although the spec lists two coats of Micron 66 to a WFT total of 450 um ( which gives you about 180um DFT - dry film thickness) we would normally give the high wear/turbulence areas (bow stem, leading edge of the keel and rudder) a third coat. The thicknesses quotes are easily applied when using an airless spray gun but if you or the yard are going to roll the coats on you will need to measure the WFT as you go and you will need to do possibly 4-5 rolling coats to achieve the correct thicknesses.
