As many have experienced, I also have oil leakage from the SD50 saildraive. I split the engine from the sail drive yesterday. Since my boat now is 7 years, I will also change the rubber diaphrams at the same time. The job was quite stright forward. I had a friend with mechanical experience to help, but demounting everything took 4 hours. The diafragms looked like new and change is probably not needed, however, I will do it to be on the safe side. I have some pictures but the files seem to be too big. Will se if I can reduce them.

Hi again,
I first removed the ladder and the wood in front of the engine. Then detatched exhaust hose, sea water cooling hose, and hoses for water heater. Remove the bolts fixing the sail drive to the flywheel part of the engine. Then removed engine mount bolt and lifted the engine slightly up using a chain hoist fixed to a wooden piece across the companionway. The engine was now slided 20 cm forward and splitted from the saildrive (used a big screwdriver to help splitting). You have now access to a flat circular plate on the sail drive. Remove that and you will find the oil seal. Since I also will change diaphragms I removed the circular part on the sail drive that is fil to the engine. This gives me a little more space. Then outside on the hull, remove the rubber seal between sail drive and hull. There are 8 bolts to be removed. Then remove bolt inside that fix sail drive to hull. After that you can just lift up the sail drive and change diaphragms.

Guys,
You that have experienced gear oil leakage from the (upper) seal between engine and sail drive, once the leakage starts, what is you experience on how much/fast it leaks?
 
It seems its my turn now, found oil (green, quicksilver gear lube) under the engine.
 
As the vacation will start next week, I'm not looking to do the repair in the next month, possibly even only after this summer season.
 
If I monitor the leakage, fill the sail drive up with fresh oil when needed, I guess I should be OK for a couple months?
 
Any experience regarding the rate of leakage?
How long after the first leak was discovered have you replace the seal?

Hi Peter,

I also had the leakage during summer holiday and did the repair during winterizing. The leakage was approx. 100-150 milliliters per 100 nm by engine on 2500 revs.

I just did a trial run of 1 hour at 2100 RPM.
Could not detect newly leaked oil, after I having cleaned the leaked oil.
I have 2 liters extra Gearlube on board, should be enough to get me through the summer :-)

Should be good. My leakage increased slightly over a 12 month period before I fixed it, but being aware of it there was no problem. Have a nice summer!
