Whilst motoring forward with my bow thruster down I heard a loud clanking noise. I put the boat in reverse and then forward and the noise stopped. I am guessing that the thruster had not fully locked out. Has anyone experienced this?

How fast were you going?

I ask because my mechanism got stiff after 3 years. In my case the thruster doesn't always retract, but I suppose the opposite might be true if the flow across the door is high.

Hi Mark and Catherine,
I was going from the lock to my mooring, probably 3-4 kn. Since posting this I have been told that we should not go faster that 1.5kn with the door open. I have since deployed the thruster whilst on my mooring and it seems to come right down and go right back up. Hopefully it is just some kind of spring action over design speed that causes the noise. Have you ever experienced this?

I was told not to go over 4 knots, rather than 1.5, which is very slow. We have never had an issue on the down drive, only on the up.

Hi,

I was told not to exceed 3-4 kn max in forward and not 1.5 - 2 kn in backward. I can imagine to go backward with the door open is quite some force pulling on the lid.

I once had a situation where my bowthruster did not respond anymore, was in kind of fault mode. Unfortunately only after 2 days and after having passed many locks and opening bridges on an inland waterway without bowthruster support I learnt that one should pull the fuse to reset the electronics. I now installed a switch as I also don't like the always present flashing of the enable switch.

Best

I have had problems with my thruster not retracting properly if I accidentally motor too fast before remembering to retract it. However, the problem has always been electrical i.e. an alarm condition indicated via the LEDs on the thruster control panel. Slowing almost to a stop, turning the bow thruster off (on the main switch board) and then back on again has, so far, always reset the thruster and it has then retracted properly. I have never experienced rattling or other mechanical noises from the thruster, except for a faint whirring noise in the forepeak during raising and lowering

BTW my thruster is a Quick unit.
