Hello,

Recently I bought a Hanse 311 (www.uisge-beatha.eu). It came with a genaker, however since the previous owner did not have the time to explain how to set it up, I did some experiments myself and I'm not sure that I set it up correctly. The main points are:
- the boat came with a long boom
- it also has two rails, one on each side.

My assumption is that the boom is not used in combination with the genaker. Is that correct?

I have the sheets going through the rail and than to the winch. I got a feeling that this is not correct because the sheet has nearly no space to move.

Does anyone have a detailed picture of his Hanse sailing with a genaker.

Thanks for your replies!
Gregor

Hi Gregor, see looks superb! And for the Genny, just use some blocks on the end of the footrail and lead the line back to the winch. Than you will see that the sheet has enough space. Also we use the selftacker line so we can ease the Genny when sailing a different course.

Sorry for the Dutch translation...

Good luck!

Hi Frank,

Thanks for your reply and your compliment. I'm very proud of her.

I'll keep the post in English

Do I understand you correct that the part of the Genaker mounted to the short boom is mounted to sheet of the self tacker so you can lift or lower the genaker? You don't use the boom, the long one?

Thanks,
Gregor

Hi, I don't use the boom. Only when sailing with the selftacker and on a wide course. Then I set the boom. With the Gennaker I don't use the boom (you will need a uphaul, a downhaul and a guylines)

And yes we use the selftacker line (schoot) to sheet the Genny. It works great. When closewinded pull the sheet hard and on a reach just ease the sheet aprox. 1 meter and you will see and feel the difference (almost like flying a spinaker). Also you can take the genny dowm much easier when you ease this sheet. The Genny will dissapear behind the main and will lose it's power. When you do it the other way you will see that the genny will keep power.... and hard work to get the damn  thing down.

See you on the water!

Hallo Gregor

Your guylines have to be in "front" of the genanaker, it means that when you have to get the wind in from the other side, you let the genaker "fly" in front of the boat and then hale the other guylines. you also have to make adjust to the downhale, said about 30-60 cm. for better flying the genaker.

The guylines have to go back to aft of  boat, turn around and then on the winch. Here is a picture of my old boat, with a genaker "flying" high. larst year i get my Hanse 312   Modi, but at the time i have no picture with a genaker

Hello,

Funny to see that two replies show a different way of sailing the genaker. To me it becoms clear that my current downhale (20cm) is to short. Using the sheet of the selftacker can solve this. Have not yet figured out what I need to make this work: a catrol that I can connect to the genaker boom, a line to fix the self tacker to forecome unrolling,...

From other boats I remember that the guylines (sheets) are brought to the back of the boat through a catrol and than set on the winch. I don't have a catrol fixed at the back and probably my sheets are to short to do this.

Cheers,
Gregor

No, no, same ways of sailing only two different ways to explain. The picture is very useful.

For the selftacker I use a smal line to fix it (forecome unrolling) and indeed a block fixed on the Anchorgear/gennaker boom and let the selftackersheet become a downhaul line...

Buy two long lines off 6/8mm and use them as guylines. Buy 2 blocks (3 also for the downhale...) and fix them at he en of your footrail. Set the whole thing up and enjoy!

Now I'm confused, use the guylines on the winches and where do the sheets go to/through?
