If you do not know why the grounding plate is mounted, I will recommend to search the internet for information about the function of the thing before just removing it. This link is just one of many, but it will show you that a grounding plate is a must if you ever mount a SSB/HF transciever. Keels/Engines and battery ground are not usable for SSBs. A keel with 17 layers of epoxy and antifouling may have some difficulties to get in contact with the water anyway. The grounding plate is exclusively for the radio - nothing else. The grounding plate above is made of porous metal, bronze or copper, and is always in good contact with the sea, unless an ignorant owner has covered it with antifouling. Just like with the IKEA furniture, read the assembly instructions - or - in other words, read a little about the item before scrapping it. Update 16/1: My operators licence (LRC) is just for marine bands and telex, but the ham frequencies are available for listening, and also for transmitting in an emergency. The ham operators normally have a lot of knowledge about radios, and I just read, that a thick layer of antifouling on the keel is pretty good for bouncing a radiowave into the air. If you choose to connect your keel bolts to the HF/SSB radio, it has to be only the SSB radio. Otherwise you will just recieve a lot of static (noise). Hams are radio "amateurs" with a license (GRC) to transmit on special frequencies.

Looks like a grounding plate for your radio. Made of porous bronze/copper. Do not paint. Inside your boat you will see it connected to a yellow/green wire. (Earth). Edited by Captain Cook - 15 January 2020 at 21:42 |
