I'm just back from another fantastic sail on our Hanse 301 Swn Y Mor but when we were motoring back in the engine died back down to about 1000rpm. It didn't stall & got us back fine. But every time I put it back in neutral & then up to about 3000rpm to motor it quickly dropped back on its own to very low revs.
Has anyone ever had anything like this or any idea what it could be?

Richard,

This sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Check (or replace) your engine mounted fuel filter, check (or replace) your in-line fuel filter (Hanse seem to use the Bosch as standard). Before you do any of this, however, you might check to make sure that any valves between the fuel tank and the engine are clearly in the 'open' position.

It's also possible you may have wrapped something around your prop or, if it's a folding version, it may not be opening properly. If either of these were to be the case, however, you'd likely be noticing a fair bit of vibration, which you did not mention. So, more likely a fuel starvation issue.

Cheers,
Doug

Hi,
It looks that the engine is starving in high revs only.
This can happen if the fuel/water separator is almost full with water and the protection valve is almost closed. Bleeding the water out of the separator will resolve the problem (with the engine off).

If it were me I would also check the water separator a Panos suggests. I had a water problem early spring this year.

Ps Where do you, Richard, sail out of?

Richard
Similar thing happened to me
It was diesel bug in the fuel clogging the fuel line
I flushed some of it out then used a bug inhibitor & ( touch wood) have not had a repeat . It looks like a black jelly.
I add the inhibitor at end of each season & fill the tank to avoid condensation
It seems to do the trick as I do not add it very often.

Hi Richard,  as already said change the filters,  you need to take them off to check so may as well change them.  If you the primary is the volco glass bowl type (mine is) you can drain water out of the bowl, but the filter itself may be clogged up.  Can get a bit messy changing the primary, depending on where it is located.   I change both filters once per year.

Dave,
I think Bovine has his 430 in Cardiff. You should go and buy him a drink. Smile
Happy sailing. [IMG]smileys/smiley1.gif" align="middle" />
