Hi All.
Our Gearbox oil Cooler failed, filling the gearbox with Raw Water. After approx 2 years from new circa 1350 Hrs.
Luckily it was spotted before we left the Dock.
I have asked for some feedback from Hanse and also Yanmar, as to the likely cause of failure and some comment as to wether they had heard of this before.
The only feedback we had from Yanmar was never mind Lads, here is a great big bill for a replacement! Nothing from Hanse.
Has anyone come across this failure before? If so, did you get any closer to finding the cause?
The boat has been regularly serviced, all Annodes changed etc.
I would think Galvanic Action is the likely culprit but would welcome any comment from anyone else.
At present, I am trying to source a suitable (Non Yanmar) realistically priced replacement.

Hi Peter,

Does your 630 have a hull anode? Nereida does not. I guess if there was a bad earth leakage into the marina this may have corroded your cooler. How are the anodes looking in the engine? Is there an anode in the gear box oil cooler? I know there are two in the engine and one in the Lube oil cooler.

Also have you checked the forward mounts specifically the M8 bolts holding the feet to the block? They share the weight of the 24V alternator and its rather heavy bracket. This has been a major problem for us. I strongly recommend you have a close inspection of these bolts especially on the port forward side beneath the raw water pump as these are doused in salt water whenever you open the water pump housing!

Regards

Hi I have just looked at our oil cooler and noticed the earthing stud to be not connected to the main engine earth. I guess yours is the same or was the same? When you get your new one connect it to the earth point on the main engine then it should receive protection from the engine anodes.
