A skipper with chemical professional background recommended me Starbrite Starthron Enzym after a diesel pest in one my 2 tanks (H508). Any experiences? He said you can not overdose.

I have suffered Diesel bug in 2 yachts. And I have cleaned tanks and lines. I used to use Anti diesel bug treatments up until 2022. Our Diesel in Cowes harbour has no added Ethanol, but I sometimes fill elsewhere when it may be E5 or E7. Then I had the idea to fitt a Dessicator in the tank vent line, this effectively dries the air incoming. preventing condensation in tank, I pull the inspection cover off tank every year and the tank remains clean bright pink bug free fuel. Evey winter at service time I check the dessicator and about half of the silica gel changes colour [at the atmosphere end], indicating it needs drying [2-4 hrs in oven at 90 degC]. When filling the tank the Diesel foams up and can coat the silica gel, so I installed valve to shut of the dessicator and let the tank vent breath direct to air, then after the foam dispears switch back to breath only through dessicator. The dessicator is a standard filter container in clear plastic with 1/4" diameter push on pipes. see attached photos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by perry - 15 September 2025 at 19:53 |

This sounds quite impressive but on our 508 there is not such access to the tubes. In my case after blowing out the tubes and sucking out the few dirt marks they could catch a rather big bit of water and diesel that apparently clung at the tip of the intake tube. Problem solved, lesson learned: fill up the tanks to the max even during a summer break (which I missed), especially in the Med with high temp differences day & night.

What sort of material did you find in your fuel filter system? That piece of black tar should not be in any fuel system on a modern diesel engine. Since the advent of Ethanol added to diesel, many bulk storage tanks are being fitted with dessicators on the breather tube, or the more expensive option, a dry nitrogen blanket of gas in the tank. I'm just saying my solution it is cheap, simple, and it is a good idea.
