I had a professional rigger do the work.
And yes, the forestay and backstay should both be loosened, as should other vertical and diagonals, but the real "slack" will be on the side where you'll be removing the cap and replacing the broken shroud, and where your halyard and topping lift will provide reinforcement. I suspect less "slack" will be required to remove a cap compared to a spreader. A few riggers refused the job, saying it was too risky, that the liability of a damaged rig wasn't worth it to them. I get that. In my case, I was quite some distance from a location where I could remove the mast, and the total cost differential was considerable. Let us know how you make out.
