I was told the boat basically sits on the keel, after all that is where 30% of the weight of the boat is. The hull pads are then basically to keep the boat upright. If you are using a cradle, then the manufacturers will says how many pairs of hull pad supports you need. With me only having a 341, there are only 2 sets of supportson the cradle, but since our marina has quite high winds in winter, the marina staff have put 2 extra sets of timber supports, one forward and one aft of the cradle. How it is supported also depends on whether you are keeping the mast up or dropping it. At Largs, we have to have the mast taken down unless the boat is in a cradle.
As to where the hulls pads go, try and get them near or on the position of the bulkheads inside the boat.

I normally let the crane put the boat on the keel until the crane only lift apr. 1500 kg. Then i put the pads hand tight on the hull - and let the crane release the lift completly.
It works fine. Just remember to position the keel base so the water runs out of the cocpit...
