@S&J: We moved the salon seat from port side of the table into master cabin. It is bolted through the floor at the foot of the bed. Only minor disadvantage is that to open the draw under the bed, you need to lift the cushion off the seat.
Under port side of the salon table we have a Dometic CFX65W. It is very slightly too large for this space but we had it in a campervan before buying the boat so it came from there. If buying again, I would probably buy the next size down. As liveaboards, we greatly appreciate having a proper freezer. If there is a lot of meat and fish in it, we run it at -18C where it should be good for keeping meat for up to 3-months. Otherwise -12C to save energy which is good for one-month storage. The CFW65W is averaging ~2.7A with -12C internal and 30C daytime in the cabin.

@mr-ludi: You will never 'solve' freezer icing. If you have a sub-zero cold surface that comes into contact with damp air, it will freeze. It is one of my chores to defrost it every ~2-weeks. We just switch it off overnight, left all the ice melt then clean-up the mess!
In UK (and probably elsewhere), our Food Standard Agency says fridges should be kept 0-5C so we have aimed to keep our fridges at ~5C and we have achieved this in galley fridge by building a customer electronic controller, removing the freezer compartment door and fitting a ducted fan to circulate air throughout the space. The freezer ices less as we no longer need to chill the cooler plate quite so cold but it still ices over about a fortnight. The Hanse fridge we have is a Isotherm 3135 with Isotherm Compact Classic 2301 refrigeration system. It is used by other boat builders too so I'm not knocking Hanse ...but it is a pretty crappy unit. We also have the optional Isotherm 30-litre 'drinks' fridge in the galley which is a far more effective/efficient. |

What did you change about the electronic controller? Do you have a photo of your fan installation?

This sounds like an excellent solution. In our 458 we have an ottoman bed that hinges up - no drawer so I'm guessing this would not be a problem. If it weren't for the noise of the compressor I might even be tempted to mount the freezer in the master cabin. Can you tell me how you mounted the bench in the master cabin and how you get access to the DST sensor in the bilge? Also how is your fridge unit mounted to the floor adjacent to the table? I presume that you have lost the ability to slide this in and out from the table. I would be very grateful if you could post pictures of the resulting installation, and if possible the mountings.

I have found a solution doing two things:
1. I have moved the temperature sensor from the ice box to the refrigerator. It takes only a few seconds because the ice box has an oben back end. 2. I have installed two computer fans to the ice box cover. One is blowing in and the other is blowing out. They are installed to the lamp before the switch and are running whenever the refrigerator fuse is switched on. Before I did that, I had about 10 degrees in the refrigerator and it got iced up after 36 hours which ends in a temperature of about 12 degrees. Now I reached 2 degrees in the refrigerator which made me calibrating the thermostat to reach about 5 degrees. It doesn’t seem to get iced up any more. Easy work. Good result. ![]() |

Looks like a good solution. What effect does this have on the freezer compartment. Is this still cold enough to freeze ice cubes?
Did you have to adjust the thermostat cutoff in any way and if so how did you do this?

After calibrating the thermostat to 5 degrees in the refrigerator, it ends with a temperature of -10 degrees in the ice box.
I didn‘t have to thermostat cutoff in any way. You can see on the following photos, that the isolation isn‘t made for a temperature of 5 degrees 🤦🏼♂️ ![]() ![]() |
