Hi all, we have a new 458 since June. I am not happy with the original installation of the throttle control. It is for me too deep nearly at the ground installed. Im am thinking of an additional control nearby the instruments (e.g. the VC 10). Is there annybody who changed it? Or any other ideas? Thanks in advance. greetings seebär

I would be interested to learn about it. Im happy with the current control but if one could add a remote operation this would be of great help. I can control bow and stern thrusters remotedly, therefore, sideway motion is solved but not forward/reverse. Do you know how VC10/VC20 controls the mechanical cable that goes from the throttle arm at cockpit to the engine? Do they add an electrical motor that eliminates that cable?

I have to say that I don't understand the installation of the throttle. Most people get caught out by the 45° neutral position. I know I still do occasionally even after 5 seasons.
I don't find it too low however as I like to nudge it with my foot. My other "issue" is that I find it very difficult to moor port side to as the visibility is so reduced. I'm interested in seeing possible solutions.

As far s I understand is the VC 10 an electronic system but can t find any info wether it is possibile to fit it in additon to the original throttle system. When I am standing at the wheel I prod permanently against the throttle with my foot. When i am sitting to serve it by hand I can t see right in front of the boat. (my dinghy is mounted in front of the sprayhood) Also the overview to portside is a problem. I must fit the boat for single handed sailing. Therefore I am thinking of other solutions than the original throttle.

I am solo sailing all the time but solved most of the problems you describe by installing bow and strern thrusters, Sleipner models, ca. 7kW each, they have plenty of power for kicking 458 sideways, so I just need to stop the boat at some distance and then thrusters can bring it to the dock either port or starboard without a problem. I can also remote control them from the dock, fix the docklines so on, all single handed. If there is a similar solution for remote controlling the throttle, it would be great to learn about it. Looking briefly at VC20 diagram it looks like they have some driver for e-shift and multiple options to control it, but I cannot find any further details how it actually operates.

this is an important issue for us too, far too low.
The throttle arm has been cut on ours from the dealer, so neutral is straight up. Will eventually look to install a throttle on the port side helm pedestal. The Yanmar manual indicates a wireless option is available. Or maybe we should install a stern thruster. Curious to hear others thoughts

I find docking is made easier, if you use your saildrive prop-wash
To your advantage, rather than a negative. In astern, the stern will rotate to starboard. So whenever possible Focus on approaching a dock on your starboard side. Approach at a slow speed at around 30 degrees, bow into dock, when you are just past your intended landing, start applying astern To both slow, and rotate your stern towards the dock As soon as you are parallel and close, jump off and secure your centre cleated rope first. If you have two onboard, you can pull back on the centre rope to pull the boat parallel. Cheers Richard
