Ratbasher, yes its very expensive, ive been quoted to take away the normal "dogbone' system and replace with the system shown in the 2nd photo above. Its going to cost approx $10k. Plus im getting a new boom (selden) to replace the existing sparcraft one thats been bent and repaired with plates on each side and gooseneck.
Apparently the same as you Ratbasher the spreaders and 'dogbone' have been moving around and become loose, the spreader has started to peel around the dogbone and the hole that the dogbone sits in inside the mast is getting bigger. I really like the solution for the spreaders and i'll feel much more confident sailing in high winds. The new goose neck will be similar in that it wraps around the mast ,again a much stronger solution.

Jeez - 10k is really stretching anyone’s sense of humour. At least the upgrade will give you that all-important confidence when the winds and seas are high. Unfortunately, if your boat is anything like mine it just means that the gremlins will shift targets….
I like H8jer’s suggestions about corrosion, though. I also strongly agree with your replacing the Sparcraft boom with a Selden as well; I’ve become seriously dis-chuffed with Sparcraft recently. As H8jer also points out, the overall message is that it’s essential to do proper rig checks, and the only was to do those is to include regular mast unstepping. Like me, I’m very glad you discovered the issue the easy way rather than suddenly at sea.

On your picture it isn’t very clear to see the brand of your mast and spreaders On the moment your boat was build (2008-2010) Hanse change from Sparcraft to Selden and back again those years. I believe it’s a Selden mast, but when it is ,I think there’s already done some repairs (good our not?) On the Selden mast C and F sections the attachment of the lower and middle shrouds are integrated in to the spreader attachment and there’s now bolt our a reforce plate in the mast your pictures show bolts and some kind of extra reforcement and the shroud attachment is like on the lower picture of Selden C-F Section mast’s The example picture you show from the rigger :the middle and lower shrouds are lower attached to the mast??? Mast pumping??
Close to the wind in to the waves in heavy sea the Hanse mast setup ( fractional afterwards spreaders with pre bent )The mast start pumping in the upper part , the section between second and in our configuration (3 spreaders) the third spreaders. This give a lot of back and front wards force on the lower spreaders. In my experience: trimming the backstay and keeping up some main (we have 3 reefs in by windy conditions) to support the mast. A babystay and running backstay’s will help to IMO

20 years ago a sailboat with jib only in heavy weather with fractional rigging like our hanse' with 7/8 lost it's mast and ended up destroyed against the pier in my old harbour. The experts (John Mast danish rigger https://www.johnmast.dk/about-us) said the reason the mast broke was because with a frational rig you need the Main sail to stabilize the mast. When being lazy and only using the jib, the wind must be below 16 knot in my opinion.

Hi Wild ,no the second photo is what my rigger proposes to do. The 1st photo is the only one of my rig the second one is of another boat that had the same issue. So it will be repaired and have a strengthening plate put inside the mast and then have the wrap around system installed so it wraps around the mast and has new fixings just as shown in 2nd photo.
And the shroud will be attached to the mast lower down. God i hope this is the right thing to do but ive had a 2nd and 3rd opinion and theyve ratified it. Edited by Aussieangus - 10 July 2023 at 11:04 |
