Another question from a 345 newbie:
Curious about peoples experience with the Selden in-mast furler. Couple of questions: I have had problems about 3 of the last 20 outings where the lower third of the furled main sail protrudes through the slot next to the exit point of the sail when I am trying to deploy the main sail - effectively jamming the unfurling process. This seems to happen less often with all the tension off of the backstay, vang and main sheet when I furl and un-furl. Has anyone else had this issue? I also feel that when I release the boomvang that the mast is much less than 87° (maybe 80°) from the mast. If I furl the sail in with the boom significantly less than parallel there appears to be some overlap of the sail on itself towards the foot of the sail when it is furled. Should I tension the boomvang to keep the boom closer to 87° when furling? ie not release the vang but only the backstay and main sheet? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Assuming you point your boat into the wind, the main should pretty much unfurl by itself, you just need to keep some tension on the furling line to control it. I dont release the boomvang, it always keeps the boom down. If sail is old, stretched at places and does not keep its original shape, I could imagine this can make some problems with its furling system.
