Well Three Peaks Yacht Race 2013 is over, we completed it but sadly did not qualify as we had to put the engine on for propulsion....
We had an exciting start where we beat Jesterjon over the line in an amazing start, nowhere near as rough as in 2011 but slightly busy to say the least. We had an engine problem about six hours of Whitehaven ( used for charging only) again we had water in the fuel... This time we have tracked it down we think to the fuel filler not sealing completely... ( this is another story) so sadly we worked on the engine for 4 hours without success, whilst this was going on we overtook Jesterjon again. He will I am sure tell his story and he has, I think a great story to tell, as I think he obviously upset some people well before the race. Sadly we then ran out of wind so we started rowing and we rowed for the last 2.5 miles into Whitehaven and whilst the runners were doing their job we worked on the engine, and found that the injectors needed re furbishing again, so by the time we had done this we were now last as we had been in port for 36 hours.. None the less we set of and caught up and overtook one boat and were catching up with a group of others, but we then had to row up the North Channel and up towards Jura, this I think was took us about 16hrs, and there was still no sign of any wind and we were running out of time, so sadly we had to put the engine on for propulsion and that meant we were out of the race, but our runners could still do their Ben Nevis run.
I could bore you with many picture of different parts of the race but at this stage I have included a few of DD waiting for the start of the race.

I will be putting a link here of a video of s rowing into Whitehaven Harbour once I have uploaded it to Youtube.

.... as promised here is a link to Youtube showing us rowing Dancing Demon into Whitehaven Harbour.
My apologies for the quality, as it was videoed by a couple who just happened to be on the pontoon as we approached.... They were all little clips so I have put them together. I have not really done much in the way of editing so it is in its raw state.

Hi Dave

Awesome images - conditions look brisk to say the least. You seem to have a double reefed main. Why no headsail?

I recall you first posting about improving your ability to row the boat and I thought you were kidding. You clearly aren't.

Thanks for sharing and first prize for effort.

Swanji, We had not put out the headsail at that time, the race was 25 minutes away from starting and we were literally in the process of getting it out, when the photographer came by....
The sea state was I think calm compared to what we had to deal with when we did this race in 2011.

Out of interest, do you use your self tacker for racing or cruising or do you have a genoa instead?
As an Admiral you have had a lot of time to think about the pros and cons of the jib and so interested in heating your perspective. I think Steve from Rubato uses his self tacker for crusing and a genoa for racing.

Swanji,
I also use my self tacker for cruising and my 130% genoa for racing.... although, I feel at times, if I have to reef my genoa, then I would probably be better with my un reefed ST, as I think it would be a better shape, but this is only my thoughts....

Dave, these are pretty spectacular pictures! They stand in good contrast to the video where you are rowing. It is quite funny, actually. I love the idea of rowing a yacht this size, by the way.

Thanks for sharing the story of the race!

Well, what a season, and its not over yet.... a Three Peaks Yacht Race entered..... a great 2 weeks holiday with the boss through the Caledonian Canal onto the East Coast of Scotland and back again.
Then the return journey of DD back south starts. This return journey includes many memorable moments from BBQ's on the beach of deserted Scottish Islands to, for some the holy grail, hoving to in a F8 with no undue strain on DD, and meeting David Dimbleby, who was filming a BBC maritime documentary for the Autumn or early next year ( you never know DD may just squeeze into shot) ...
The first week of the return journey with two Fireball dinghy sailors was from Corpach to Ardrishaig, taking about a week - first stop was approx 20 miles from Corpach in Loch Lynne past the Corrin Narrows to the Holy Tree Inn with free moorings and an indoor smiming pol, plus good beers. Then, the next day,  from there to Blackmill bay, off the Island of Luing,  to anchorand BBQ as the weather had brightened up after traveling all day in thick fog.

Sunset in Blackmill bay

The folllowing day was to the Crinan Canal, past the entrance of the Corryvreckan, the Worlds 3rd largest whirlpool. On this short leg we spent a number of extra hours just cruising around the Loch opposite the Crinan and following a lovely yacht and taking in the views.

We then entered the Crinan and enjoyed a lovely evening watching wild Sea otters playing in the water.
It was an evening of gracefull yachts to moor up outside the canal.

Moored boats outside the Crinan canal.

We then spent 2 days traveling 8 miles in the Crinan Canal to Ardrishiag where we left the DD for about 10 days.

Our next week of sailing brought DD further south with the trip from Ardrishiag to Lochranza.

Where we picked up a mooring buoy and for 36 hrs could not get ashore to sample the delights of the distillery or the pub due to very high winds. Then as is the way in Scotland the sun came out and and the wind dropped to a managable 25knts so we blew up the tender and went ashore for the evening.
The next day we set of for Bangor in Northern Ireland, but due to the high winds again we decided to shelter in Stranraer for another day.

Then we set of for the last leg Stranraer to Douglas, Isle of Man. This was going to be a night passage as my crew had never done one before.
This leg was anamazing one, we set of up Loch Ryan from Stranraer and out with speeds of 7 knts and then turned the corner to head south down the Mull of Galloway and when the tide was with us we made great time but then the tide turned and we were down to 1.9 knts SOG, then for our last push to IOM the tide turned again and we were maken speeds of 8-9knts for hour after hour, fantastic sailing.

You will see from the track that at the north of the IOM i steered clear of the overfalls at the Point of Aire and Bermuda Bank, which can be tricky.

DD is now happy in her new mooring at Douglas Marina, IOM

Thers is still a long way to go before the end of this season, so hopefully i will be able to start visiting the other ports on this wonderful island.

Dave
PS I realise that this post is not really about racing but it is a natural follow on from the 3PYR
