Intermittent fault, sometimes works, sometimes not. I have changed the solenoid and deck switch as well as circuit tested everything! I believe the problem may lie with the Thermal Switch - but not sure how this works? It is connected through the solenoid / deck switch and may be the reason why sometimes the winch does not operate. Also the thermal switch is internal to the motor - not sure how to check. Any pointers greatly appreciated.

we have the same problem a few years ago.
Carbon dust in the Elect motor.
Clean the elect motor and renow the brushes can help you.

If you suspect the thermal switch, then you can bypass it temporarily to see if the problem is solved.  Simply connect to wire going into the motor with wire coming out. This can be done at any place along the wires and also at the ends where they connect to the control circuits. Good luck.

Many thanks for relevant info. I will test these next visit to the boat. I will also revert with findings.
