The goal of this topic is to discuss some options available on the 445.
Clarify their utility, get feedback from user and share informations.

Here some of the options I would like to get some feedback on, others will propbably come later on.

-------------
Lampa- 2 winches pos. 2 (Lewmar 48 AST ),primary (option)
a1- What is the purpose of it?
a2- Is it for sailing the genoa?
a3- Can we sail a genoa without it?
a4- Anyone had experience with it, recommendation
a5- Which one is it? the one up front or the one more on the back

-------------
Lampb- Sprayhood.
b1- Anyone had experience with it, recommendation.
b2- How easy is it to fully remove the canvas in case of a major storm with waves washing the boat?
b3- How easy would it be to attached a custom bimini to it?

That it is for me for now.
Looking forward to here from you all.

I can't speak to the winch issue specifically, but I do have an opinion on the spray hood (dodger). I have an H430 without a dodger which I think helps to preserve the visual profile of the boat. However, having just completed a 650 nm delivery trip in an H545 in breeze gusting 45-50 knots at times with big seas in Bass Straight, I now really appreciate the value of the spray hood. The 545 had one fitted and we were dry though out the trip which would have been miserable without one, even in this big boat. We set the autopilot and sheltered under the dodger, warm and dry. I have a 495 arriving in late June, and will almost certainly fit a dodger before contemplating any serious off-shore cruising. I had always been a bit sceptical of their value, but now I'm convinced - the bottom line is that they may look a bit ugly, but they work.

Thanks Nicrob for the feedback,

You seem to have been pretty happy with it sailing under the hard conditions.
Was it a dodger provided by Hanse originaly as an option?

One part I am still not sure is how the one provided by Hanse compares against other custom build ones.
  1. How did you find its quality?
  2. Was it solid?
  3. How was the canvas?
  4. Was it solidly attached to the cockpit.
  5. Do you know how easy it would be to take of the canvas,
  6. or to fold it in cases waves start breaking over the cockpit.
In summary I am wondering if a custom made one would/could be better.

Sprayhood, dodger:

Regarding the sprayhood this link might be a better place as people already started to talk about it.

It was a locally made dodger. Very robust and made by a trimmer here who does all the work for the local Hanse dealer. My colleagues and I were amazed how well it stood up to the conditions. No leaking, and no concerns at all about collapsing. It was great. We had no green water over the boat, but plenty of force 9+ spray. My impression is that the local option is preferred because of superior fabrication over the factory fitted spray hood.

I sailed on the same boat in a regatta in January, and the dodger was easy to remove/collapse for racing without taking the fabric off the frame. I also spend time crewing on an H540 with a dodger that is similarly easy to remove for racing.

Good luck!

Hi,

I´ve ordered a 445 for delivery in june with the primary winches option. As far a I know you need them if you use a genaker or genua, because the sheets from the jib and main will be controlled via the other winches.
The winches mentioned are the forward ones.
Hope this helps!
